Readers searching for a fresh encounter with Scripture can delve into Meditations on Luke, a collection of daily devotions intended to guide the reader through the book of Luke, which gives us some of the most memorable stories in all of Scripture. Luke is unique among all the biblical authors because he is the only one we are certain was not Jewish. Each entry begins with a Scripture reference that picks up where the previous reading concluded. The reader is encouraged first to read the passage from the Bible, then to read Chris Cadenhead's reflection on that passage. A prayer concludes each devotion. Taken together, the Scripture, response, and prayer will guide readers' own meditations as they listen and respond to God's voice, coming to us through Luke's Gospel.
Scotty Gray's Hermeneutics of Hymnody is a comprehensive and integrated approach to understanding hymns. It is unique in its holistic and interrelated exploration of the biblical, theological, liturgical, literary, musical, practical, and historical/biographical/sociocultural dimensions of one of the most basic forms of Christian literature. A chapter is devoted to each of these seven broad facets of hymnody and relates that facet to each of the others. Those who write hymns, compose hymn tunes, study hymns, compile hymnals, select hymns and tunes for the ministries of the church, and those who read and sing hymns can benefit from a keener sensitivity to and a deeper understanding of how these facets are vitally interrelated infine hymnody from various times and traditions. The book of James is my favorite book of the Bible outside of the Gospels. James writes in a way that speaks to me. He's straightforward and he doesn't pull any punches. In 2019, I decided to slowly take nearly each verse from the Book of James and reflect on it. I posted my reflections each Tuesday on my social media accounts. The response was better than I expected from my followers and some encouraged me to take my thoughts and put it in a book. I decided to take their advice.

Reading Joshua was written for anyone who wishes to engage critically one of the most, if not the most, problematic and troublesome books in the Bible. Part of the Reading the Old Testament series.Using the best of current historical-critical studies by mainstream biblical scholars, and the most recent archeological discoveries and theorizing, Laughlin questions both the historicity of the stories presented in the book as well as the basic theological ideology presented through these stories: namely that Yahweh ordered the indiscriminate butchery of the Canaanites. This ideology is criticized for what it is: a xenophobic and genocidal approach to the issue of how human beings should act toward one another in a multi-cultural world. Read against the backdrop of the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), these stories may have served well the purpose(s) of their author(s). Thus these troubling accounts may have had their time and place, but that time and place is not the twenty-first-century world in which we now find ourselves.John C. H. Laughlin is Professor Emeritus of Religion at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. He earned a BA from Wake Forest and MDiv and PhD from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. A teacher for more than forty years, Laughlin specializes in the Jewish Scriptures, archaeology, and philosophy. He has served as a field supervisor for many seasons of archaeological field work in Israel, including at Tel Dan, Capernaum, Banias (Caesarea Philippi), and Kursi. He is the author of numerous articles and book reviews, and his own books include Archaeology and the Bible and Fifty Major Cities in the Bible.Praise for Reading Joshua"Authentic native of the Bible Belt, fully conversant with mainstream biblical scholarship, and experienced archaeologist, John Laughlin offers a new translation and refreshing no-nonsense commentary on one of the most troubling books of the Bible. He pulls no punches. For starters, he conveys and confirms the thinking of both mainstream biblical scholars and Palestinian archaeologists that the Joshua story of how the Israelites conquered Canaan and purged the land of its native population never really happened. And the really troubling thing for him is that the writers of Joshua have their god not only approving such actions but also ordering them in the first place'." -J. Maxwell Miller, Professor Emeritus, Emory University"Laughlin has produced an unflinching critical commentary on the book of Joshua, basing his analysis on extensive research into the latest and best archaeological evidence. By adding a touch of "moderate" postmodernism, he provides an analysis that places this book into its own historical and ideological context-without preconceived religious notions of what Joshua is 'supposed to say.' Laughlin gives us not only a critical commentary on the text, but also a critical commentary on the ideology that created the text." -Jeffrey A. Fager, Professor of Religion and Philosophy (ret.)
The knowledge of quantitative turbulence mechanics relies heavily upon the definition of the concept of a vortex in mathematical terms. This reference work introduces the reader to Liutex, which is an accepted, accurate and mathematical definition of a vortex. The core of this book is a compilation of several papers on the subject. presented in the 13th World Congress of Computational Mechanics (WCCM2018), Symposium 704, Mathematics and Computations for Multiscale Structures of Turbulent and Other Complex Flows, New York, United States on July 27, 2018. This compilation also includes other research papers which explain the work done on the vortex definition, vortex identification and turbulence structure from different insight angles including mathematics, computational physics and experiments. The thirteen chapters in this volume will be informative to scientists and engineers who are interested in advanced theories about fluid dynamics, vortex science and turbulence research.
Gustav Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus) was the Swedish king whose intervention in the Thirty Years' War was instrumental in pre- venting Roman Catholic forces from crushing the Lutheran Church. His is an inspiring tale of self-sacrificing love for Christ and His Church!"Gustavus Adolphus is a hero of every nation," says Samuel Rawson Gardiner, the English historian. June 1930 is the three-hundredth anniversary of the coming of Gustav Adolf to Pomerania to defend the political and religious liberties of Sweden by saving the religious and political liberties of the oppressed Protestants in Germany. This is an epoch in history, secular and religious, and every Lutheran, every Protestant, every educated person, should know about these glorious days. "It is doubtful whether the military annals of any nation offer a period more worthy of admiration than the eighteen campaigns of the Swedish army in Germany," writes Prof. Charles Franqois Dominique de Villers. In "Gustav Adolf-The Greatest Lutheran Layman," William Dallmann (1862-1952) tells the story of the heroic Swedish king from the perspective of a 20th century Confessional Lutheran.
