His correspondence with Twain comprises some of the most poignant pastoral letters ever written for he, as Twain confesses, possessed a pen "that healed."

When did being a Kardasian >"Do You Know Me?" is a thought-provoking poem that reflects on the modern obsession with fame and notoriety. In several poems included in this collection, we find that the poet is able "to strike the barren rock for the gushing moisture" due to his power of seeing things in a new way. The sharp conciseness of the style aptly shows that the poet is a meticulous artist.

In this poetry collection, we notice the flavour of lyrical sweetness. The most remarkable characteristic of these poems is that the poet has aptly avoided banal epithets and false elegance. The poems show remarkable style, and a wide diversity of theme. The intense creative power shown by the poet makes its presence felt in all these poems.

There was a dog who had a good home and a good life, for a dog. From puppyhood, he had food, a place to sleep, plenty of attention and a sense there was freedom somewhere. But like most dogs, he reflected the anxiety and fear of his masters. He had dreams of glory but saw shadows everywhere. When someone shouted, he cowered. He was housebroken but sometimes he was careless, His masters hit him and he whined. When they brought home a new kitten, he growled at her.

In rummaging through the nooks and crannies of animal (and other) life, James Roderick Burns' debut flash fiction collection explores what it means to be human. From grandiloquent raccoons, entrancing a whole community in the stadium, to melancholy terriers dissecting the motivations of their masters - while taking apart something a little more tangible - To Say Nothing of the Dog goes to places longer fiction wouldn't dare: into the gloomy, revealing guts of things, where foibles come to light and polite conventions are reduced to their essence. By turns comic and dark, these 38 compact tales punch well above their weight, and introduce a startling new voice to contemporary fiction. BIOJames Roderick Burns is the author of a flash fiction collection, To Say Nothing of the Dog, and five collections of short-form poetry, most recently Crows at Dusk (Red Moon Press, 2023). He graduated with distinction from the second cohort of Oxford University's MSt in Creative Writing, reviews for London Grip and serves as a volunteer poetry reader for Ploughshares. He lives in Edinburgh with his wife and daughter. He can be found on Twitter @JamesRoderickB and his newsletter offers one free, published story a fortnight at abunchoffives.substack.com.
