Here is a wealth of insight on a great selection of Psalms which will help preachers and all believers to appreciate their richness and depth of meaning. For example, the author comments on Psalm 23: David wrote this Psalm at the height of his maturity when he could have said as most men in this world say, "I can manage my own life. I don't need anyone else, I'll sort out my own problems," but he didn't. Even though he reached the top of his career if you like; even though he was the top man of his nation, the King of Israel, he was saying: I am a sheep and I need a shepherd. This Psalm is not for those who are dying, it is for those who are living. One reason why we apply it to death is that in the Authorized Version the word "death" was put into the Psalm and it is not there. It is, "Yea, though I walk through valley of deep darkness I will fear no evil." You can walk through that valley tomorrow morning without dying. It is also due to the inclusion of the words at the end of the Psalm "forever", making it a reference to the future life. But in fact, if you have a Bible with marginal references, you will notice at the bottom it is Hebrew "as long as I live". Now Christians can read eternity into that, but David was talking about as long as he lived here. So this Psalm is to help you Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, next week - however near your death or far from it you are.

The word "exodus" means going out, and it is essentially an escape story. All escape stories are exciting and interesting to read, and the book of Exodus is no exception. Here we have the account of the greatest escape in human history. A military expert has sat down to work out the kind of problems facing this escape. You realise that there were probably over two million people - men, women, and children - to say nothing of thousands of animals. They lived in the most forti¿ed country that the world had then seen. Its borders were held by rows of fortresses. The book of Exodus is not just an escape, it is an elopement. For it is the story of a runaway marriage, the true story of a covenant made between God and his people. God said: "Let my people go that they may come and serve me." It is not just to be saved from Pharaoh, but to be saved to God. This is the story of the book of Exodus - how they began the journey that was to lead to the land of blessing.

Jeremiah was God's man for a nation declining from having been one of the first powers to being a very third-rate power, a nation losing its empire, losing its territory, a nation getting involved in all sorts of relationships with other nations to try to survive by joining larger power units, a nation that was doing exactly what ours is doing, and that was becoming weak in its external and political relationships because it was becoming weak morally and spiritually inside. As we go through this prophecy you will think you are reading the Sunday newspapers. It is a most relevant part of God's Word. People used to bring me newspaper cuttings during our studies of Jeremiah. They were taking the Word of God, then picking up their newspaper the next morning and relating God's eternal Word with man's word. It becomes possible to see how it all fits.
