When a person looks around the city of Vassar, it is hard to imagine that this was once a vast cork pine forest in the Saginaw Valley. Townsend North, along with his brothers-in-law James and Newton Edmunds, came to settle the land in 1849. Vassar quickly went from a small lumber camp to a fast-growing village and would be known for setting many records for Tuscola County, including being the first county seat. Vassar also had the first newspaper, the first house of worship, the first schools, and so much more. In later years, it would also become the only city in the county. Vassar became a lot like Mayberry, in the fact that everyone knows everyone and there is a small town atmosphere that draws people to town. This became well known in 1949, when Vassar celebrated its 100th birthday. To this day, Vassar is still known for its small-town charm.
Like many other communities along the 824-mile Historic National Road, Knightstown owes its existence to the paving of this remarkable roadway. When it became evident that the new road would cut across his Henry County, Indiana, farm, early settler Waitstill Munson Cary hired national road surveyor Jonathan Knight in 1827 to plat the tiny town and then named the community after Knight. Over the years, Knightstown's prosperity in many ways has paralleled the ups and downs of travel and transportation along the Historic National Road, also known as U.S. Highway 40. This collection of vintage images traces Knightstown's journey from a settlement on the west bank of the Big Blue River to a close-knit community bound by family and priding itself on a history of education, architecture, and of course, Hoosier basketball.
Railroad tycoon turned real estate developer Patrick Calhoun named the premier residential boulevard of his Euclid Heights allotment the Overlook because of its location high on a bluff overlooking Case School of Applied Science, Western Reserve College, Lake Erie, and the city of Cleveland. By 1910, the boulevard was lined with the mansions of Cleveland's wealthy and powerful. Today, although traces of the Overlook's glory days remain, most of its great mansions are gone, replaced by apartment houses and the dormitories and fraternity houses of Case Western Reserve University. This is the story of that transformation.
Indianola, founded in 1849, is the county seat of Warren County, Iowa. It is located 12 miles south of Iowa's capital, Des Moines, at the intersection of U.S. highways 65 and 69 and state highway 92. The city is home of the National Balloon Museum, begun in 1972; the National Balloon Classic, an annual nine-day balloon rally; the Balloon Federation of America's national office; Simpson College; the Des Moines Metro Opera, a widely acclaimed summer opera festival; and is host to the Iowa Wine Festival each summer. This book focuses on the history of ballooning in Indianola, which hosted the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships from 1970 to 1988, and the National Balloon Classic from 1989 to the present. This is the story of how Indianola became the ballooning capital of Iowa.
Washington Landing, as the settlement was called in the early 1800s, was a popular river port along the Missouri River. Many German immigrants were attracted to the rolling hills and valley reminiscent of their homeland, and other settlers saw potential as well. The settlement grew quickly, and by the time the town of Washington was officially established in 1839, it was the most prosperous town in Franklin County. John B. Busch established a brewery in Washington in 1854 and produced the first Busch Beer. Franz Schwarzer began manufacturing what would become his world-famous zither (a German, stringed musical instrument) in 1866. Henry Tibbe began making corncob pipes around 1869, and Washington later became known as the "Corncob Pipe Capital of the World." Today Washington holds the state record for the most buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and hosts four museums, including the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame. Nestled in the heart of Missouri wine country, Washington draws thousands of visitors to the area each year.
In 1796, several Welsh families fled their homeland to start new lives in America. Theophilus Rees and Thomas Philipps are considered the founding fathers of the Welsh Hills. In 1801, after residing for a few years in Pennsylvania, Rees and Philipps purchased about 2,000 acres of land in Licking County, Ohio. This area is known as the Welsh Hills. Soon they were joined by other families with the last names Thomas, Lewis, James, Johnson, Griffiths, Evans, Jones, Davis, Williams, Owens, Price, King, Cramer, Shadwick, Pugh, White, and Hankinson. Their descendants still reside in and around the Welsh Hills. The Welsh Hills is predominately located in Granville and Newark townships, but a small portion is also located in McKean and Newton townships. This fertile land with hills and valleys and an abundance of timber and natural springs enticed these families to make their permanent home the Welsh Hills.
Carved from the Connecticut Western Reserve, Madison Township was formally organized in 1811. Lake Erie, the Grand River, and fertile land attracted New England settlers arriving by foot and oxcart. They cleared wooded land to make way for farms and survived Ohio winters in log homes. The discovery of bog iron created a boomtown near the mouth of Arcola Creek. Astute businessmen built smelting furnaces and ships. But when the iron pits were exhausted, both industries disappeared and so did the boomtown. Fertile land remained to support farms, and later a modern landscape nursery industry arose. In the 1920s, the Lake Erie shore was again discovered--this time by land developers and summer vacationers. Over the past 200 years, Madison's families built businesses, beautiful homes, schools, and churches. They left a historic legacy that remains to be enjoyed today.
Detroit's first mayor, Solomon Sibley, and his wife, Sarah (Sproat) Sibley, were responsible for organizing a group that set out in 1818 for a plot of land 30 miles north, at the confluence of the Huron River of St. Clair (now the Clinton) and several Native American trails. The future town would be named for Pontiac, the warrior chief of the Ottawa Nation, best known for his "Indian uprising" of 1763 against the British at Fort Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac. Many of Pontiac's founding fathers were veterans of the War of 1812. They named their new streets for heroic figures of those struggles: Lawrence, Perry, and Clinton. Two years after settlement, Pontiac became the county seat for Oakland. It would also become a mill town, railroad hub, wagon and buggy manufacturing center, the site of a state asylum, and a mecca for automotive industries. Pontiac was the nation's leading manufacturer of trucks and buses, before and during the heyday of General Motors Truck and Coach division. The construction of the Pontiac Airport in 1928 only enhanced the city's role in southeast Michigan. It has long been a cultural melting pot. Today Pontiac is known as the northern Woodward Avenue terminus for the annual "Dream Cruise."
Poland Township was the first township to be chartered in the Connecticut Western Reserve and was settled by Connecticut pioneers. Jonathan Fowler founded the township and owned an inn near Yellow Creek. This building still stands and is Poland's oldest structure. An important stagecoach stop on the main highway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Poland's population soared in the early 1800s. The first blast furnace west of the Alleghenies was built here, and William McGuffey, of the famous McGuffey readers, taught school in Poland before going on to national fame. Poland's education legacy did not stop there. Poland's College Street was home to eight colleges at one time, including the Poland Academy, Poland Seminary, Poland Female College, Poland Law School, and the Poland Medical College. William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, was a graduate of the Poland Academy and Senator, and later Ambassador William Calhoun graduated from the Poland Seminary. Poland today maintains a quaint New England atmosphere, showing its colonial heritage.
By 1813, in an area originally inhabited by Native Americans, including a significant Delaware Indian village located on White River's western banks, the future Greenwood was made safe for settlement by the Kentucky and Indiana militias. In 1818, with the New Purchase treaties and establishment of Whetzel Trace, the earliest east-west transportation route through central Indiana, the dense, overgrown forest became readied for settlement. Arising from humble beginnings as Smocktown, the community was officially named Greenfield in 1825, followed by renaming to Greenwood in 1833. The territory has seen tremendous growth through the decades since John B. and Isaac Smock arrived, transforming the land from a pioneer village into a contemporary hub of business and industry. Accused of being a "bedroom community" of Indianapolis, Greenwood strives to maintain its relevance as a unique and historically proud community.
Lombard has been called the "Lilac Village" since the late 1920s when William R. Plum, affectionately known as the "Colonel," bestowed his world-renowned lilac collection to the village for use as its first public park. Colonel Plum's 2.5-acre estate was known as Lilacia and began in 1911 after a trip to the Lemoine Lilac Gardens in France. By the time Plum passed away in 1927, he had amassed over 200 varieties of lilacs and had the largest collection of French hybrids in the world. Jens Jensen, the famous landscape architect, designed a public space out of Plum's lilac collection with winding paths of native limestone, tulips by the thousands, and a lily pond in the park. The first community-wide Lilac Festival was held in May of 1930, unveiling Jensen's Lilacia and including a Lilac Queen and Court, a pageant, parade, and wide variety of events and festivities celebrating the village's new park.
In 1849, a cholera epidemic devastated Cincinnati, taking the lives of 4,114 residents. The First German Protestant Aid Association proposed creating a home for the orphaned children and established the German General Protestant Orphan Asylum in Mount Auburn. In 1851, the annual Orphan Feast and parade began and was one of the largest one-day festivals in Cincinnati for 137 years. In 1949, the desire to move the children from the city to the country drove the purchase of 60 acres in Anderson. The orphanage's name changed to Beech Acres after the beech trees lining the property. In the 1980s, with the need to serve children in a community setting, Beech Acres Parenting Center closed its residential services and expanded into the community and schools with parenting programs, classes, mental health services, foster care, and parent coaching to strengthen families for children.
Stunned and grieving survivors stared into their burned-out town on the western frontier in the midst of the Civil War. William C. Quantrill's Missouri guerillas raided Lawrence, Kansas, on August 21, 1863, and killed 180 men and boys. Women lost husbands, children lost fathers, and fathers lost sons. Every one of the 2,500 residents lost either a loved one, a neighbor, or acquaintance. A few left town but most survivors were determined to remain and remember; not to "wink out." Newcomers brought industry and innovation. The University of Kansas, 1866, and Haskell Institute, 1884 (now Haskell Indian Nations University), grew into major institutions.
Farmers from the East found the broad and fertile prairies of McHenry County offered the perfect soil and climate for growing corn, wheat, oats, barley, and rye. This led the way for a flourishing dairy industry that eventually supplied milk to the city of Chicago. The first settlements appeared in 1835 in towns such as Crystal Lake, Woodstock, Harvard, and Cary. Families such as the Walkups, the Crandalls, the Beardsleys, the Stickneys, and the Terwilligers travelled by oxcart and rode on horseback from distant states. As word of the lush countryside spread, other farmers came from England, Ireland, and Germany to plow the fertile fields of the nation's heartland.
Shelby County has a rich and interesting history. Shelby County was created in 1827 and originally included almost all of Moultrie County, Pana, Assumption, and most of Praireton Township in Christian County. Today it is still one of the largest counties in Illinois. The county seat, Shelbyville, is historically linked to Abraham Lincoln, who made numerous visits to Shelby County during his circuit riding days. Early pioneers found abundant wildlife in the forests and prairies. In the 1840s, the pioneers began to break the prairie and found fertile soil. The arrival of the railroad spurred the rich agricultural history of the county that continues to this day. Samuel Moulton, state representative and U.S. congressman from Shelbyville, introduced the bill that established the Illinois Free Public School System. Chautauquas were presented at the Auditorium in Shelbyville, which still exists today, and at Lithia Springs. More than a dozen cities, towns, and villages combine to create a fascinating history of this county.
Most of the first pioneers came from New York by steamship across Lake Erie, disembarking in Detroit in the 1820s. From Detroit, it would take three days of treacherous travel through dense forests, thick brush, and swampy countryside to reach their destination--a hilly region in the northwest corner of Plymouth Township that would come to be called Northville. In the nearly 200 years since the first pioneers cleared the land and established their homesteads, Northville has distinguished itself as one of southeast Michigan's most desirable communities. Its rich historical heritage and small-town charm are evident in the stately Victorian architecture of the city's vibrant downtown and tree-lined neighborhoods. Surrounded by the rolling hills of adjoining Northville Township, the community has been shaped by generations of stakeholders committed to creating and maintaining Northville's picturesque and prosperous identity. Throughout its storied history, Northville has been home to the world's largest manufacturer of school furniture, the site of aviation pioneer Eddie Stinson's aircraft company, and the location for one of automotive legend Henry Ford's first village industries, the Northville Valve Plant.
Ever since the first settlers arrived in 1816, Parma has steadily been growing, residentially and industrially. It was once called Greenbrier, named after the thorny shrubs abundant in the area. Parma became a city in 1931 and is now the largest suburb of Cleveland as well as the seventh-largest city in Ohio. The city is home to notable landmarks such as General Motors and Cuyahoga Community College. One of the homes in Parma was even a stop on the Underground Railroad. From the first tavern opening in 1819 to presidential candidates dining at local establishments, Parma is full of inspiring people, places, and history that have made the city what it is today. The historical images in this book bring to life the stories and people of the past, which will carry on to future generations.

Dating all the way back to 1812, the history of brewing in Cincinnati is a long and illustrious narrative. In the mid-19th century, the Queen City's rapidly expanding German population definitively transformed the industry, making Cincinnati one of the nation's foremost brewing centers. Principally based in the vibrant Over-the-Rhine district, the golden age of brewing in Cincinnati saw the creation of architecturally spectacular brewery structures, a proliferation of related industries, as well as an abundance of saloons and beer gardens. The enactment of Prohibition crippled this formerly booming industry, however, and although local brewers returned to revive their trade following the repeal of Prohibition, the industry would never regain its former prominence. These days, Cincinnati's brewing culture is experiencing a multifaceted renaissance with a promising outlook. Cincinnati's Brewing History offers a concise overview of the history of brewing and beer culture in the region through vintage and contemporary images, as well as brewing collectibles.
First held in 1849 in Detroit, the location of the Michigan State Fair rotated in the early years between Detroit, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Adrian, Jackson, Grand Rapids, East Saginaw, Lansing, and Pontiac before settling permanently in Detroit. When Detroit department store magnate Joseph L. Hudson sold 135 acres of Woodward Avenue farmland to the Michigan State Agricultural Society in 1905 for $1, the permanent home of the Michigan State Fair was established. On February 12, 2009, Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm signed an executive order effectively ending a 160-year tradition--the Michigan State Fair.
