Before New Mexico became a state in 1912, hardy pioneers had already established the village of Miller, known today as Artesia, on the dusty southeastern plains of the territory. Abundant artesian wells and, later, oil wells drew settlers from far and wide to make a living and a home in Artesia. As with any town, Artesia has evolved and changed throughout the years; businesses have come and gone, while the love for Bulldog sports still attracts the young and old. Today, Artesia continues to grow as the community takes pride in preserving and displaying the history of the town. Gloucester City was originally named Fort Nassau. The fort, located along the Delaware River, was first settled by the Dutch in 1623. The settlement was an ideal port location along the shores of the river used for travel and transportation. The city became the county seat of old Gloucester County for over 100 years. Once the county vacated the city, it transformed to an industrial hub along the riverfront. The birth of industry caused the need for development of housing and businesses catering to local and visiting patrons. Gloucester evolved from a small fishing community to a bustling city, which was incorporated in 1868. Today, Gloucester City is a global port city along the banks of the Delaware River.
Pocatello was founded as a station on the narrow-gauge Utah and Northern Railway in 1878, and it has been a railroad town ever since. Passenger and freight trains arrived and departed in all four directions of the compass, 24 hours a day. The Union Pacific also built extensive shops at Pocatello, where railroad equipment was serviced, maintained, and repaired. In addition, refrigerator cars were iced from a large icehouse, and railroad ties were treated with preservative at a tie plant. The advent of the automobile, improved roads, new technologies, and the introduction of the diesel-electric locomotives all combined to change the railroad industry, affecting Pocatello in many ways. Passenger trains were discontinued, the steam-locomotive-servicing facilities were closed, and shop buildings were torn down. However, the railroad in Pocatello remains a vital part of the local scene today, with freight trains continuing to run through the city day and night.
West Deptford Township was officially incorporated on March 1, 1871, when it was separated from the much larger Deptford Township. Pioneers, drawn by fertile land and proximity to waterways and major cities, discovered that this small acreage of land was perfect for farming. These family farms grew into small family-owned businesses, attracting others wishing to begin homesteads and other companies. As time went on, clusters of family farms were transformed into small communities. Neighborhoods such as Verga, Colonial Manor, Thorofare, and Greenfields emerged. Today, West Deptford, a prideful community, is a blend of the old and new. Old family farmhouses stand proudly next to new developments. West Deptford features images and stories from many township residents.
