Bartel Leendert van der Waerden made major contributions to algebraic geometry, abstract algebra, quantum mechanics, and other fields. He liberally published on the history of mathematics. His 2-volume work Modern Algebra is one of the most influential and popular mathematical books ever written. It is therefore surprising that no monograph has been dedicated to his life and work. Van der Waerden's record is complex. In attempting to understand his life, the author assembled thousands of documents from numerous archives in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States which revealed fascinating and often surprising new information about van der Waerden. Soifer traces Van der Waerden's early years in a family of great Dutch public servants, his life as professor in Leipzig during the entire Nazi period, and his personal and professional friendship with one of the great physicists Werner Heisenberg. Ich wollte einige konkrete Themen, wie Symmetrie, lineare Gruppen und quadratische Zahlkörper, ausführlicher be­ handeln als dies im vorgesehenen Text der Fall war, und darüberhinaus wollte ich den Schwerpunkt in der Gruppentheorie von den Permutationsgruppen auf Matrixgruppen verlagern. Ein anderes ständig wiederkehrendes Thema, nämlich Gitter, sind spontan aufgetaucht. Ich hoffte, der konkrete Stoff könne das Interesse der Studenten wecken und gleichzeitig die Abstraktionen verständlicher machen, kurz gesagt, sie sollten weiter kommen, indem sie beides gleichzeitig lernten. Das bewährte sich gut. Es dauerte einige Zeit, bis ich entschieden hatte, welche Themen ich behandeln wollte, und allmählich verteilte ich mehr und mehr Aufzeichnungen und ging schließlich dazu über, die ganze Vorlesung mit diesem Skript zu bestrei­ ten. Auf diese Weise ist ein Buch entstanden, das, wie ich meine, etwas anders ist als die existierenden Bücher. Der bei allen Säugetieren vorkommende Gebärmutterhals, als Abschluß der Ge­ bärmutterhöhle gegenüber dem Scheidenraum definiert, zeichnet sich beim Rinde durch einen besonders komplizierten Bau aus. Sein anatomischer und histologischer Aufbau wird anband der Literatur beschrieben und die hormo­ nellen und nervösen Einflüsse, welche seine Funktion steuern, besprochen. Das funktionelle Verhalten der Cervix uteri des Rindes wird während Brunst, Dioestrum, Trächtigkeit und Geburt im einzelnen geschildert. Da über die Invo­ lution der Cervix im Anschluß an die Geburt nur ältere Literaturangaben vorlie­ gen, wurde anband eigener Untersuchungen an 36 Normalgeburten das Verhal­ ten der Cervix im Puerperium beschrieben und auf die Bedeutung des raschen Abschlusses der Gebärmutterhöhle durch den sich bildenden Zervixschleim hin­ gewiesen. Nach einer weiteren Literaturübersicht zur Pathologie der Cervix wird in eigenen Untersuchungen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Zervixverände­ rungen und Konzeptionsstörungen beim Rind berichtet. Von insgesamt 694 wegen Fruchtbarkeitsstörungen untersuchten Rindern und Kühen litten 203 = 29,25% an einer Zervixveränderung. In 108 Fällen war nur die Cervix verändert, während in den restlichen 95 Fällen gleichzeitig eine klinisch nachweisbare Erkrankung der Gebärmutter vorlag. Die Entzündung der Cervix äußert sich in einer vermehrten Hyperämie, Lappenbildung und In­ duration der Portio vaginalis uteri und häufig auch des ersten « Burdiringes». Veränderungen im übrigen Verlauf des Zervikalkanales wurden nur zweimal, im Anschluß an Geburtstraumen, beobachtet.
