Twelve stories selected from 775 entries to the 2022 Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize. A showcase of some of the boldest new voices in short fiction. In turn tender, brutal, surreal, gentle, loving, desperate, catastrophic and hilarious. Every story in this anthology explores what it is to be human, and each one will stay with you long after reading. They feature a shaved horse, an Irish commune, runaways, a first sexual encounter, stranded sprats, a celebrity stalker, a European flirtation, a modern-day factory, extreme heat, a rugby-ball-shaped rock, Icelandic foxes, and a life in fast-forward.
The Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize was created in 2019 as a celebration of the short story form and the resilience of independent booksellers. Funded by Brick Lane Bookshop, the competition is open to all UK residents and seeks to discover, publish and promote new, exciting and diverse voices in fiction. The 2021 anthology features stories from Aoife Inman, Danielle Vrublevskis, Katherine Gutierrez, Leeor Ohayon, Nayela Wickramasuriya, and more, with a foreword by Brick Lane Bookshop owner Denise Jones and an introduction by project manager Kate Ellis.
