Two Voices, One Story This is the true story of a girl called Amy and the English "mother" who adopted her from an institute in China when she was just a baby. It's a story about love, family and identity; and the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. When Amy came to be adopted in 1999, China's then notorious one-child policy had given rise to a generation of missing girls. Amy was one of them, destined to life in an orphanage if she was lucky enough to survive. That is, until she was adopted by a loving British couple who were desperate to give her the home she deserved; Elaine and Lee. In this moving autobiography, Amy and Elaine chart their own personal experiences of their shared adoption story. Theirs is not a political account, but one which is open about the challenges of adopting a child from a foreign country and the long journey that follows; from China to the UK and from infancy through to adolescence, as Amy and her new family learn and grow together. Now a bright and ambitious young woman on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Amy is braced for an exciting journey into adulthood, one which her proud mother is delighted to be able to share. Two Voices, One Story is a frank but uplifting account of the complex adoption process and the profound relationship between a mother and her adopted child.

  • - Nun, Wife, Rebel
    by Anne Boileau
    £10.49

On 31st October 1517 Martin Luther pinned ninety-five theses on the Castle Church door, Wittenberg, criticizing the Church of Rome; they were printed and published by Lucas Cranach and caused a storm. Nine young nuns, intoxicated by Luther's subversive writings, became restless and longed to leave their convent. On Good Friday 1523 a haulier smuggled them out hidden in empty herring barrels. Five of them settled in Wittenberg, the very eye of the storm, and one of them - Katharina von Bora - scandalised the world by marrying the revolutionary former monk. Following a near miscarriage, she is confined to her bed to await the birth of their first child; during this time, she sets down her own story. Against a backdrop of 16th Century Europe this vivid account of Katharina von Bora's early life brings to the spotlight this spirited and courageous woman. Anne Boileau lives in Essex. She studied German in Munich and worked as an interpreter and translator before turning to language-teaching in England. She also holds a degree in Conservation and Land Management from Anglia University and has written and given talks on various aspects of conservation. Now she shares, writes and enjoys poetry; her work has appeared in a number of anthologies and magazines; she has also won some awards, including First Prize with Grey Hen Press, 2016. She translates modern German poetry into English with Camden Mews Translators and was Chair of Suffolk Poetry Society from 2011 to 2014.

Francesca's presence pervades the lives of those she meets. She leaves an indelible mark, the true nature of her personality revealed through other people's encounters with her. Her boldness as a spoilt child. Her temporary (and just) suffering as the victim of a shrink - an ambiguous and even more unscrupulous person than her in grasping anything graspable. And the more than explicit revelation of her blind egocentrism, because of which she ignores the one person who has tried tirelessly to help her. Three very different characters tell the same story about the enigmatic woman who has entered the lives, each one illuminating who Francesca really is, from their own point of view. Each character has made an error of evaluation which they realise has prejudiced their lives and their relationships. An omniscient narrator will have the final say. This is the first version in English of Errors of Evaluation by the Italian writer Paola Pica

  • by Ian Hoskin
    £14.49

Ladies First looks at the way society stereotypically views and places differing expectations on women and men. The title of the series plays on a traditional phrase most often used to indicate the custom of women being served first, often by women and allowed to enter or exit first, a privilege granted by men.None of the views expressed in Ladies First are shared by photographer, Ian Hoskin. They have all been identified from conversations, social interaction, the workplace, politics, advertising, magazines, literature, television and radio. When viewed in conjunction with the images, the texts, wherever possible, are the same to highlight the differing way we perceive and treat women and men. Informing these images is the important and topical issue of what are the defining factors that make up masculinity and femininity. Some assumptions about gender are based on societal norms and peer groups, while others on an outdated view of evolutionary biology.Hoskin began working on Ladies First in the 1980s. Some thirty-five years later he realised that sadly few of these cliches had changed. He hopes to shed light on our continued gender stereotyping and push for change and true equality.
