The notion as to which historical figure if any, was used by Bram Stoker as the original model for his fictional character Count Dracula, has never been adequately resolved for some fans. Some argue it was his boss at London's Lyceum Theatre whilst others show cause why it was a composite of the landlord class during Ireland's Potato Famine. Sean Robert Curran however, the expert in Celtic history and folk-lore who lectured at the University of Ulster, stated Dracula was probably based on the fifth century Celtic Chieftain Abhartach from Derry, who drank tainted blood and subsequently died. According to Dr. Curran, Abhartach supposedly rose from his grave as an undead and demanded bowls of blood from his subjects. The word for tainted blood in Gaelic is 'droch'fhoula' pronounced 'droc'ola' (Agence France-Presse). Since at a young age Bram's mother introduced him to Irish folk-lore and later he became a student of history, there's every chance he would have known about Abhartach. Whoever the original model was, it is later explained in Bram's novel when, in the second entry in Mina Harker's journal of September 30, Van Helsing is quoted thus ". . . I shall then make it known to you something of the history of this man . . ." ". . . I have asked my friend Arminius of Buda-Pesth University, to make his record . . ." The reply Van Helsing received from Arminius, as recorded in Mina Harker's journal, was: "He must indeed, have been that voivode (military ruler) Dracula . . ." ". . . for centuries after he was spoken of as the cleverest and the most cunning, as well as the bravest of the sons of the 'land beyond the forest' (Tran(s)-sylvania) . . ." "The Draculas' were," says Arminius, "a great and noble race." Historically this fits the blood-thirsty Vlad III Tepes (one of the meanings of Tepes was Impaler), aka Vladislaus Dracula (or to be patronymically correct, Drăculeşti) whom in Eastern Europe was a knight whom following on from his father, was a member of the Sacred Order of the Dragon. The word Drac in 15th century Romanian had two meanings; one was dragon and the other was devil. Some suggest that Stoker's Dracula refers to the Devil. They also assert that he was modelled off the Tepes Drăculeşti family, they can't have it both ways. This prominent dynasty fought under the Christian banner of a Sacred Order. No such order would have tolerated a name which meant devil. So the Tepes family surname of Drăculeşti, definitely meant dragon and never devil.

A Burning Ship at Sea, a Lost Statue and the Soul of a Kingdom When the captain of the cargo ship G.F. Haendel hoisted anchor in Bremerhaven on August of 1880, bound for Honolulu, he would never have accepted the idea that the bronze effigy of a Hawaiian king lashed to the deck might have anything to do with the violent gales that threaten to tear away the masts, or with the coal fire that has started deep in the hold where the crew won't be able to stop it. Captain Gerhard Schrock's mettle is brutally tested by the collision of two North Atlantic storms that climax in the ship's tumultuous near-sinking. When next a ship fire is discovered, the physical limits and emotional state of the crew are laid bare with freezing weather in their perilous race to reach the Falkland Islands on the burning vessel, where Schrock will witness his ship and the cargo, including the statue of the "Savage King," be lost to the sea or destroyed by the fire. A maritime hearing on the disaster looms in a small Falkland Islands courtroom, while Shrock questions his will to go to sea again. Forced to confront the dangers and the solitariness of his occupation, the dilemma is magnified by what he had with a Sydney harbormaster's daughter who-like his ship-he had loved and lost. Although the captain is exonerated and makes his way to Hawaii to find work on land, he is incredulous to learn a kahuna sorcerer purportedly 'prayed down' his ship. Introduced to another kahuna dream healer who claims to have been involved in saving the ship until it reached the Falklands, and to have 'seen' Schrock on his ship far out at sea, he must try to unravel this strange reality with the help of his new friends. The Captain & the King is a story based on real events blending an ordeal at sea, a cross-cultural love story of resolve, and an exploration of how men of logic confront the supernatural. Author Jack Champlin has infused a piece of late 1880s Hawaii history with canny storytelling filled with unforgettable characters and evocative details, taking the reader to another time in an unusual place. At the same time, the story portends what the Hawaiian Kingdom will someday become and why the first king's mana, or soul, takes on such importance for present-day Hawaii.

Survival of the education field is dependent upon the status of its educators who are becoming endangered or extinct at alarming rates. New teachers hold a profoundly significant place in the educational hierarchy. Consequently, there is a mounting concern relative to the substantial increase in the shortage of new teachers in the field of education. This is rapidly becoming a national concern. As new teachers enter the professional field of education it is essential that they received the level of support needed from all members of their organization to assist them in becoming successful educators. "School districts have a duty to provide site-based support for their new teachers at each school site. Programs that promote effective monitoring and supportive induction help a new teacher build: 1) self-confidence and self-efficacy, 2) positive dispositions, and 3) on acquiring and strengthening knowledge and professional skills. Other advantages include 1) lower attrition rates; 2) increased teacher effectiveness and efficiency in their classroom; and 3) saves school districts money" (Lambeth, 2012, p. 1). As a means of addressing this issue, the author asked herself three questions: 1) Why are turnover rates increasing so quickly nationwide; 2) What is causing the new teacher attrition; 3) What can be done to slow down and eventually eliminate this educational obstruction? After completing research which afforded the author the opportunity to closely analyze this matter; she decided that a tool of support for new educators was needed. Here it is!! "Bridging the Gap: From Outside to Inside the Classroom".
