The farmers in developing countries are now renewing interest I approaches such as biological control, biopesticides and cultural practices to control insect pests. However, these non-chemical methods are not popularised among farmers in developing countries. These eco-friendly methods will play an important role in pest management in future, since they will bring about sustainable development. A Systematic approach is required to develop and adapt the eco-friendly programmes for many crops and for today''s production practices. This book contains the papers, which were presented in the Indo-Russian workshop held on 11 to 14 November 2008 at the BIT Pilani, Goa Cam-pus. The workshop was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Delhi and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Moscow. The papers presented in this workshop deal with topics which include damage and fracture mechanics, nano- and micromechanics, contact mechanics, dynamics, elasto-viscoplasticity, mechanics of accreted solids, biomechanics, mechanics of composites and thermo-mechanics. A good number of Russian scientists from Russian Academy of Sciences Institutes and leading Russian Universities and Indian scientists from various Indian Institutes of Technology and other academic institutes as well as from various re-search laboratories participated and delivered lectures during the workshop. The main aim of the workshop was to provide a forum to the scientists for getting familiar with the latest advances made in various aspects of the subject both the countries, and to facilitate personal interaction between Russian and an scientists working in the area.
