Three affect to rule with divine assistance. The fourth, whose cousin and sister have been mistreated and whose friend has been slaughtered, watches, and waits. He is a pagan, he is a Mercian, and his name is Penda.By his side is a woman determined to escape her brutal past. She aids his struggle against his treacherous brother and their alliance founds a dynasty with the potential to end injustice and suppression, if only they can continue to stand together...A story that spans generations, and travels from Sutton Hoo to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and back to the buried treasure of Staffordshire, this is the first volume of the tales of the Iclingas, the family who ruled Mercia, fighting to avenge their kin and to keep their people free.
Tens of thousands of civilians of many races and the British Army, together with Chinese soldiers and many Indian soldiers were forced to flee northwards in Burma in 1942. The invasion was swift and by May almost all of the country had been overrun by the Japanese. The last airfield at Myitkyina was taken in May and now the only way out was on foot through dense jungle and over high mountain ranges to India. Many did not know how far they would have to travel and where safety could be found. Many had already travelled 100's of miles from the south in the heat before the monsoon. Captain Gribble was used to working in the jungle areas in Kachin State but he would never normally have travelled in the monsoon which started as many thousands were struggling along remote tracks in the jungle which were to become waterlogged and very dangerous. Many died of illness, exhaustion and hunger. These four stories give a vivid impression of these historic journeys. One was written by the author's mother, Josephine Chapman whose journey covered over 700 miles from Rangoon to Imphal. Records of outstanding ITA rescue missions were given to the author, together with photos taken on his fraught journey by Dr Farrant Russell. This was a huge exodus about which not much is known.
The novel is a satirical, campus novel set in the recent past. It concerns the ivory towers of academe, what it is to be Non-PC in the Eighties, and a great deal of alcohol. It is December, 1985. The year is winding gently towards its close until Dr Fergus Girvan, a Classicist at Ariel University, finds his research has been stolen by the man who is also seeking to steal his daughter. But which man is, actually, the more unscrupulous of the two? And is there hope for either of them?"You have such a lovely use of language I found myself drawn into your story on that alone. Merry murder from piles and fabulous descriptions of the knee cartilage make this a joy to read." (Kelly Van Nelson, author of The Pinstripe Prisoner, long-listed for the Yeovil Literary Prize 2017) "It's really interesting how you create a sense of modern day angst that we can all relate to but set that within an academic setting relating to historical and archaic study. It's a lovely juxtaposition between two worlds and works really well." (Karl Warburton, forthcoming novel: The Taxi-Dermist)"It is good to read such fluent and entertaining writing. ... The tone is just right for the world-weary Fergus: it is always gratifying when a new character so quickly becomes familiar. ... Comedic writing often runs the risk of being anything but; however, the dry wit deployed here is sharp (indeed, Tom Sharpean) and well directed." (Jago Piran, author of YA thriller The Devil's Own Time)
