As the SHA celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2017, it seems appropriate to remember and reflect on those individuals who have made significant contributions to the discipline at large and to the society in particular. The lives and careers of these key figures, as captured in the pieces reproduced in this volume, reveal a great deal about the history of historical archaeology and the SHA over the last fifty years. Indeed, the developments of the last half-century shed light on the trajectory of the discipline and society since the fourteen-member committee gathered in Dallas in January 1967. Since that time, the society they created has grown to become the primary venue, clearinghouse, and advocate for the research, protection, and preservation of historic-period archaeological resources worldwide. An understanding of what the society and its members have accomplished in its first fifty years will provide insight and inspiration as we look ahead to the next half-century.

Winner of the Discovery Prize for Nonfiction, Writers' League of TexasFinalist for the CLMP Firecracker Award in Creative Nonfiction "A tour-de-force collection of essays on issues surrounding race, education, and American history."-Kirkus Reviews (starred) "Profound insights into the current reality of America, taking on race, inequality, violence, and education. An impressive debut from an exciting new voice!"-Daryl Farmer, author of Where We Land: Stories and Bicycling Beyond the Divide "Sean Enfield shares tales as varied as finding connections in churches and moshpits as well as teaching at a Muslim middle school...He tells us facts we should know and reminds us of truths we shouldn't forget. "-Sean Hill, author of Dangerous Goods and Blood Ties & Brown Liquor "Driven by an empathic imagination and formal invention, Holy American Burnout! is a book of marked complexity and honesty."-Sara Eliza Johnson, author of Vapor and Bone Map Sean Enfield delves into the great American condition: burnout. Threading his experiences both as a Texan student and later as a first-year teacher of predominately Muslim students at a Texas middle school, Holy American Burnout! weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historical fabric of Black and bi-racial identity. Enfield intersects examinations of which voices are granted legitimacy by virtue of school curriculum, the complex relationship between basketball and education for Black and brown students, his students' burgeoning political consciousness during the 2016 presidential campaign, and cultural figures ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Hamlet. These classroom narratives weave around Enfield's own formative experiences contending with a conflicted bi-racial family lineage, reenacting the Middle Passage as the only Black student in his 7th grade history class, and moshing in both Christian and secular hardcore pits. As Enfield wrestles with the physical, mental, and emotional burdens that American society places on educators, students, and all relatively conscious minorities in this country, he reaches for an education that better navigates our burnt-out empire.

Take the throne.Ensnare the enemy.Guard your heart. After the Daemon King's betrayal, Sersa Scáth never wants to see Sin Drumghoul again, let alone hear his sullied name. At least, that's the lie she clings to in hopes it will become true-all while drowning in memories of him that feel like a lifetime ago. But even after three moons apart, Sersa is blinded by anger and sees no way to defuse the emotion that's altered her magic indefinitely. To make matters worse, Jestin Drumghoul is out for blood and vengeance for the old king's murder, and his main target isn't Sin. It's her. In the Soullanders' eyes, murdering the old king is Sersa's claim to the throne-a claim Sin would kill for her to accept. He wants nothing more than for her to rule beside him, even if it means baring the ugly secrets he's concealed to win her back. But Jestin isn't the only one who has other plans for her... Giving Sin a second chance to not only prove his love but also repair Sersa's trust in him isn't easy, and her ice-cold heart is in danger of shattering before it ever truly thaws. But secrecy isn't just for kings, and Sersa finds herself questioning illusion versus reality once again. Failing to decipher between the two might just tear she and Sin apart once and for all-if their enemies don't do it first.

What really happened to Kennedy? How was the CIA and the "Evil Empire" involved in shooting down a 747 airliner? Did the Challenger Shuttle actually blow up? What are Double Yellow Lines? What is CARE? What did Kettering have to do with Instrument flying? Mr. Harrington owned American Flyers with a dozen locations across the United States. He visited each of them regularly accumulating thousands of hours in his personal Cessna 182, 310R, two 340's and Citation Jet - he even enjoyed flying the Good Year Blimp. Working for American Flyers he met and befriended hundreds of students, fellow pilots, instructors, mechanics and FAA personnel. There was seldom a moment in those fifty years when flying wasn't the subject. He was intimately involved in writing all of its instructional manuals, newsletters and net site, including its Flight Instructor Renewal Course (FIRC, ) the most attended in the world. His also taught weather and piloting courses at the University level. Its safe to say, "He's been there, done that" and his goal in this book is not an "ego trip" but rather to share his experiences and the lessons he learned "outside the classroom" and only that which can be learned from experience. In addition to wanting you to be a safer pilot he desires to increase your appreciation of aviation by sharing a lot of unknown history with the reader, for instance, personal contact with men like Hoover, Frasca, Robertson and Jeppeson. Along with a lot of these unknown historical facts this book reads like a novel, includes plenty of humor and is full of well intentioned, good advice (and Double Yellow Lines). And for those who learned to land an aircraft by "rote" with dozens and dozens of "touch and goes" until you finally "got it," he offers a completely new technique called "Care to Land" which is an acronym for Coordinated Aileron, Rudder and Elevator, the key word being "coordinated". This innovative new system doesn't require an instructor to learn and can be practiced on your next cross country even without deviating from your course. He refers to it as a "cognitive" skill that unlike the ones learned from repetition, stay in-bedded in your memory for a lifetime and most important, create much safer landings.
