The Malabar Independent Syrian Church is the smallest of the jurisdictions into which the St Thomas Christian community is divided today. The present work shows how the bishops of this tiny, one-Diocese Church, now largely forgotten, once stood at the centre of the events that shaped the present ecclesiastical situation.

Dr. Humm analyses early Christian prophetic activity seeking to understand the psychological states behind it. Assuming that the ancients followed the same patterns, most instances described in early Christian literature are reviewed and categorized.

The earlier period of Greek-Syriac translation was characterized by freer versions, while in the seventh century there are very good examples of literalism. Since Sergius worked at a time between these two periods, his translation will be of special interest to Greek and Syriac scholars.
