This poetic rendition of Dante's Inferno seeks to maintain most of the original intent of the work while updating it with carefully veiled references to current-day political and economic issues. It is written in classical poetic form, with strict anapestic hexameter meter and an 'aabccb' rhyming scheme.
That unbelievable night .... Once the other preteens and I gathered together, Uncle Goat did what he normally did; he took us deep into the island's forest. The forest was pitch-black, blacker than black! We couldn't see five feet in front of us. No one lit a torch, and no one had thought to bring a flashlight. Somehow, Uncle Goat knew where he was taking us. I suspected he could get there with his eyes closed. We wandered through the swampy woods, using gators as stepping-stones and snakes as ropes to cross small streams and ponds. Now the gators and snakes didn't bother us much. We ate them, but those darn black bears were scary! Thank goodness Uncle Goat wasn't a coward. He sniffed the air like a hound dog to locate the black bears around us. Once he knew their whereabouts ... "Now listen here, darn black bears!" Uncle Goat shouted. "If y'all know like I know, you would mosey on out of the way. Otherwise, one of you will end up being a rug resting beneath my feet tonight. So back the heck up. Do you hear me!" Slowly but surely, the black bears backed away. They didn't dare cross our path after Uncle Goat's taunting. But we heard their heavy breathing and saw their beady eyes in the blacker-than-black forest night. We walked a long way, and it was getting mighty late. Thank goodness we finally reached the clearing in the dark and swampy woods. The full moon boldly emerged from its hiding place. That was our cue. We all gathered around to hear Uncle Goat tell one of his famous tales. How he came up with those tales, we didn't care to know. We just gazed at Uncle Goat, drawn in closer, held captive with each word spoken. At last we grew tired, lay down on the dewy grass, and fell asleep. I never knew how we got home after the late-night stories. Until this night. Instead of sleeping, I opened my eyes for what felt like the longest second ever. I always suspected Uncle Goat knew magic. Now I had evidence. What I saw was amazing. I swear. I mean, I double promise. I saw something incredible...something un-for-get-a-ble!

After 31 years trying death penalty cases and the like in Contra Costa County, California, for 13 years supervising the first Alternate Defender Office in the country to handle felony cases, William Veale retired as Chief Assistant Public Defender. Then he filed a lawsuit accusing three of the most powerful men on the planet of mass murder and treason for complicity in the Attacks of 9/11. This is Veale''s account of what happens when such power is confronted with undeniable facts and must resort to the most egregious abuse of judicial power imaginable. Then-Vice President Dick Cheney became the first sitting vice president in the history of the nation to be accused of what amounted to war crimes. Among the government operatives employed in the termination of the case was Judge John Walker, first cousin once removed of President George W. Bush. The records of the case and Veale''s various letter pleas to influential citizens complete this account of the crime, its cover-up, and most importantly the abject failure of the press in this country to stand up at all much less as a participant in the fight for justice.
Whatever Baby is a poetic meditation on grit and vitality. A revealing display of characters who struggle with the blurry demands of morality and responsibility. A fictitious journey without judgement, the figures in Whatever Baby must negotiate the temptations of their relative paradise, choosing between love and lust, monogamy and sex, money and dreams, ethics and impulse. Set amongst an array of paradise beach landscapes and hyper modern urban cities, the tales of these characters and towns are an open letter to the misfits, lovers, travelers, politicians and idealists who inhabit these lively pages. Nothing is left clean, and all are struck by the persistent waves of living.Delivered in modern poetic prose, infused with a swaying literary transcendentalism, the stories and poems in Whatever Baby are deftly divided into Long and Short pieces. Intently written in stylistic verse and prose, steadied by a staunch clarity, Whatever Baby is a feat of craft and whimsical romance, grounded in the realities of a damaged culture, and sharply changing times.

On Sunday morning, church services are broadcast on almost every TV channel in America. They are either presented as a live performance or in a carefully edited pre-recorded format. If you miss the television version, mega churches stream their programs on the internet. Eleventh Street will take you back to a time when a worship service had no television monitors in the lobby or microphones on stage. Sermons were not memorized and preachers did not deliver their message in exactly twenty-two minutes, timing their message to accommodate production guidelines. Preachers did not wear expensive suits or dress down in stylish pre-washed jeans and sandals. It was a time when the "greatest generation", as Tom Brokaw once called them, began to recover from a worldwide war; to begin their life anew. At Eleventh Street, the men who sat attentively in their pew had fought many battles, both abroad with weapons and at home with the tools of their trade. Wives and sweethearts had waited and prayed for them during the war. But now, they were reunited and sitting together in church. The congregation worshiped in the only way they knew, joyfully and with hope. Without a television audience to observe their every move, they rejoiced and sometimes shouted. The service may have lasted longer than twenty-two minutes, but they knew they had been to church. After the war, all Lucas Marcum wanted was peace, a genuine and lasting peace. First, he fell in love with Maggie. A wife who restored a love of life and hope for a family. Then he reunited with a preacher from back home in Kentucky, a man everyone called "Pastor". Through all of Lucas''s trials and temptations both before and after the war, Pastor never forgot him or cast him aside. It was then, the time he stepped through the door of a small Baptist church in Hamilton, Ohio, that Lucas thought he had finally found the peace he sought. It was Pastor who led him to the altar of repentance. At church, he met Shorty who became his spiritual mentor, teaching him as much of the Bible as Lucas could absorb. With Shorty as a guide, the path to peace was in view. But Lucas was soon reminded that even a good man is vulnerable to the imaginations of evil and scheming men. Surviving hand-to-hand combat in World War II did not equip Lucas for the war of worship to follow at his new-found church. In the Pacific Islands, Lucas knew where the enemy hid. In church, he mistook murmuring between pews as the prayer of a penitent saint. Lucas was not trained or prepared to fight the wolves in sheep''s clothing that would scatter the flock of Eleventh Street. These wolves hunted in packs and did not kill with the first bite. Rather, they tore at the very soul of their live prey, prolonging the agony of ultimate defeat. Though preachers and their pack of followers can inspire and nurture, they can also disillusion and destroy. Eleventh Street is a story of redemption revealing a struggle for the soul. Lucas is tempted to backslide and to fight in his own strength, but is ever mindful of the lessons learned from Pastor and Shorty. Lucas seeks a lasting peace, but the fatigue of spiritual battle takes its toll.
