Although we can recognize further progress in educating health and a considerable number of educational programs for health informatics / medical informatics specialists have been set up, there is still a need to enhance these educational activities world wide, considering global developments as well as new curricular concepts.
This work presents an XML engine for storage and retrieval of XML documents which covers the full range from data-centric to document-centric applications on a single integrated platform. It also investigates transaction management for concurrent XML processing.
An anthology that answers a need to understand design that supports the daily life of people with dementia. It intends to support the research and development around the topic of dementia in older people, which has stressed innovation, participation in the design process, as well as technical competence and the physical environment.
The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) carries out research in the field of ageing, with a focus on the role that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can play to promote Active Ageing. This book attempts to reflect aspects of the contribution ICT can make to quality of life for older citizens in Europe.
Although this thesaurus has its roots in an historical collection at the University of Missouri-Columbia where literature on health care informatics has been collected, the rapidly evolving nature of the field is reflected in the use of recent literature as the source for the data.
This publication analyzes and documents the responsibilities which all parties bear in law and ethics to render drug treatment in medicine as safe as it can be, and the liability which arises when injury is suffered.
Presents articles on Aging-in-Place, Assistive Technology, Monitoring and Telehealth, Transportation and Mobility, and Design. This book includes a section on monitoring and telehealth, that reveals applications of advanced pattern recognition techniques, some of which have found roles in the military, process engineering, and financial sectors.
Introduces a particular methodology to build adaptive Web sites and presents the main concepts behind Web mining and applying them to adaptive Web sites. This book includes a chapter, which explains the Web mining process and the tools to analyze Web data, mainly focused in machine learning.
A survey of work on passage times in stable Markov chains with a discrete state space and a continuous time. A unifying framework is provided by probabilistic potential theory and the results presented in the text are interpreted from this point of view.
The motivation behind the research presented in this book stems from the modelling of stochastic processes occurring in present day research of performance analysis of data handling systems. Coverage includes the one- and two-dimensional random walk, the workload process and fluctuation theory.
In the research project presented in this book, an innovative type of fibre concrete is developed, which improved both the tensile strength and the ductility: the Hybrid-Fibre Concrete (HFC). The expression 'hybrid' refers to the 'hybridisation' of fibres: short and long steel fibres were combined together in one concrete mixture. This is the contrary of conventional steel fibre concretes, which contain only one type of fibre. The basic goal of combining short and long fibres is to improve the tensile strength by the action of short fibres on the one hand and on the other hand to improve the ductility by the action of long fibres. In this research project all important aspects needed for the development and application of HFC have been considered. A total of fifteen mixtures, with different types and amounts of steel fibres were developed and tested in the fresh state (workability) as well as in the hardened state (uniaxial tensile tests, flexural tests, pullout tests of single fibres and compressive tests). A new analytical model for the bridging of cracks by fibres was developed and successfully implemented for tensile softening response of HFC. Finally, the utilisation of HFC in the engineering practice was discussed, including a case-study on light prestressed long-span beams made of HFC.
Developments in clinical terminology construction have brought together specialists from different disciplines, such as Medicine, Computer Science, Philosophy and Linguistics. This book indicates the spectrum of Medical Informatics.
Aims to bring together researchers working in the basics of electromagnetic NDT on one hand and industrialist discussing their practical problems on the other hand. The papers in this work cover topics as: Microwave applications and Material Characterization; General Eddy Current Inspection Tasks; Novel Techniques and Sensors; and more.
This text details advances in learning theory that relate to problems studied in neural networks, machine learning, mathematics and statistics.
Ethics and accountability have become important themes for modern government, as in most of the countries there is a severe crisis of legitimacy. Increasingly, there is a feeling that performance management alone will not solve this crisis. This book deals with ethics and accountability in a context of governance and new public management.
Development of models with explicit mechanisms for data generation from cluster structures is of major interest in order to provide a theoretical framework for cluster structures found in data. This work proposes a framework for typological classification based on a fuzzy clustering model of data generation.
The opening of the economy to external markets has brought about the reassessment of the significance of large spatial agglomerations and the accentuation of polarization at national scale. New lifestyles, new urban environments and new forms of governance emerge and need to be theoretically and empirically underpinned.
Provides insight into those elements of acoustics and aeronautics that are connected directly with the problem of aviation noise. This book, intended as a textbook for a university course on aviation acoustics at an undergraduate level, is suitable for use as an instrument of self-study for the practicing engineer.
This book is intended to provide a treatment of the theory and applications of Stochastic Neural Networks, that is networks able to learn random processes from experience, on the basis of recent developments on this subject.
Ever since the early days of machine learning and data mining, it has been realized that the traditional attribute-value and item-set representations are too limited for many practical applications. This book collects studies on mining and learning within graphs, trees and sequences in studies worldwide.
Discusses developments in numerical simulation of physical phenomena associated with electromagnetic NDE methods, electromagnetic sensors, signal and image processing techniques and inverse solutions to NDE problems. This work emphasizes basic science and early engineering developments in the field and contains 36 technical papers.
Human body and the world in which it functions is a changing complex adaptive system. We are able to collect data about it, but the challenge is to infer local dynamics from that data. Intelligent Caring Biomechatronic Creatures and Healthmaticians have a better chance of inferring the dynamics that needs to be understood than human physicians.
Information on the transportation tools used and the prevalence of typical problems associated with out-of-home mobility. This book analyses the impact of health, social networks, home environments, psychological aspects on the mobility and activities of older people, differences between urban and non-urban areas, and age and gender differences.
Divided into four parts, this book contains a number of articles that cover mathematical models of heart, arterial tree, baroreceptor control and applications for simulators. It includes historical reviews on the heart, arterial tree and baroreceptors. The models presented are all based on fundamental physiological principles.
This volume reports the achievements of Telenurse. Telenurse is a project within the R&TD programme of the EU dedicated to promoting the use of the International Classification for Nursing Practice as a common language for nursing in Europe.
Current approaches to the development of legal knowledge-based systems (LKBS), such as the use of rule-based systems, case-based systems or logics, have obtained limited theoretical and practical results. This overview of the field describes present approaches and analyzes their problems.
