Fascia has become the new buzzword in the field of rehabilitation and movement re-education. Until recently its contribution to musculoskeletal dysfunction had been underestimated. We know now that fascia plays an important role in health, wellbeing and mobility. It transmits the power of the muscles, communicates with the nervous system and serves as a sense organ. Many different groups of professionals are now exploring the world of fascia, as evidenced by the explosion of research in this field. However, many physical therapists are still unfamiliar with fascia and continue to think of it as the 'dead packing material' that is pushed aside during dissections in order to visualize the 'important stuff' like muscles and nerves. Physical therapists with their varied skill-set in manual therapy techniques are well-placed to take on this important tissue. Mobilization of the Myofascial System aims to help them to do that. Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS), the technique described in this book, has its origins in manual physical therapy for the articular, muscular and neural systems. Tom Myers' book Anatomy Trains, which examines the myofascial meridians for manual and movement therapists, has been the framework and inspiration for the development of MMS. In this book the author outlines the theory and pathophysiology of fascial dysfunctions. A full description of the MMS assessment and treatment approach is given as well as guidance on ways in which it may be integrated into the other methods normally used by manual therapists. Subsequent chapters offer full descriptions and color photos of the MMS techniques. The chapters are organized into various anatomical regions simply to facilitate learning. These divisions are, of course, artificial, as fascia is a continuum, from the top of the head, down to the toes. Mobilization of the Myofascial System is primarily intended for physical therapists who have been trained in manual therapy, but it will also be valuable for osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists, structural integrators and other body workers who are seeking an alternative way to work with this important and fascinating tissue.

The word "e;embodied"e; is one of those terms, such as "e;grounded"e; or "e;centered"e; that can be discussed forever without being experienced. Defining embodiment, though, can be quite tricky, because much of what is taught in western societies about the body devalues the felt experience. The categories of formal learning, particularly anatomy and physiology, are taught with the fundamental source being cadavers (dead bodies), and conceptualizations that do not include our own vitality, or life force. Without the felt experience, embodiment is just another concept that can be discussed ad nauseum. The felt experience (or "e;phenomenology"e; in academic-speak) is the path away from these endless discussions and conceptual befuddlement. This book provides a basic training on how to become aware of our physiological functioning and our sense of vitality. A part of this training comes from becoming hyper-aware of how we breathe. This awareness makes it possible to feel our own organs and how they function and interrelate. To help us refine our awarenesses of our own organs we are entirely fortunate to learn and practice methods, developed over thousands of years by Indian and Chinese cultures. With these fundamentals this book leads us through a series of connected experiences using mudras to feel our organs, the flows of our life force (Qi) and the flow of that life force through our meridians. From that we learn to feel our own chakras and sushumna (central channel), and our ability to perceive our connections with our environment and ecosystem. This then provides the basis for a body sense of our spiritual existence and development. Thus the definition of embodiment evolves into deeper awareness within our bodies and deeper connection to the world.

  • - Manual therapy, exercise, and needling
    by Cesar Fernandez-de-las-Penas

  • by Suzanne Clements Martin
    £37.49

Dr Martin's book provides a theoretical framework and specific progressive exercises in the Pilates environment in their work with those individuals who have asymmetries of the spine, ribcage and pelvis associated with conditions such as scoliosis. This book helps Pilates instructors who want to move beyond basic certification to work safely and effectively with those who have structural and functional asymmetries. The many musculoskeletal ramifications of spinal asymmetry are explained, based on relevant anatomy and current theories of causes of deformity, thus throwing light on an often confusing topic. A developed framework offers practical solutions that will further the body of knowledge in the specialized education of Pilates instructors by enabling them to learn a safe and systematic method of instructing those with scoliosis. This framework helps instructors administer individualized Pilates exercise progressions. These comprise: creating a client profile for the individual; developing concepts and considerations for effective exercise delivery and execution; and presentation of those exercise progressions. In addition, two important aspects not yet found within the Pilates field are addressed. The first is the importance of the significant role, outlining the scope of practice of the Pilates instructor in the care of those with spinal asymmetries. And secondly is to identify separate approaches necessary for differing populations at distinct times of life. Stages such as youth, and adult each require a certain approach. The decades of young adult, mid-life, and elder years present special challenges due to the co-morbidities associated with the adult with scoliosis.
