  • - A Basic Guide
    by Ken Blake
    £26.49

Teaches the basic, yet all-important, data skills required by today's media professionalsThe authors of Data Skills for Media Professionals have assembled a book that teaches key aspects of data analysis, interactive data visualization and online map-making through an introduction to Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google My Maps, all free, highly intuitive, platform-agnostic tools available to any reader with a computer and a web connection. Delegating the math and design work to these apps leaves readers free to do the kinds of thinking that media professionals do most often: considering what questions to ask, how to ask them, and how to evaluate and communicate the answers.Although focused on Google apps, the book draws upon complementary aspects of the free QGIS geographic information system, the free XLMiner Analysis ToolPak Add-on for Google Sheets, and the ubiquitous Microsoft Excel spreadsheet application. Worked examples rely on frequently updated data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Election Commission, the National Bridge Inventory of structurally deficient bridges, and other federal sources, giving readers the option of immediately applying what they learn to current data they can localize to any area in the United States. The book offers chapters covering: basic data analysis; data visualization; making online maps; Microsoft Excel and pivot tables; matching records with Excel's VLOOKUP function; basic descriptive and inferential statistics; and other functions, tools and techniques.* Serves as an excellent supplemental text for easily adding data skills instruction to courses in beginning or advanced writing and reporting* Features computer screen captures that illustrate each step of each procedure* Offers downloadable datasets from a companion web page to help students implement the techniques themselves* Shows realistic examples that illustrate how to perform each technique and how to use it on the jobData Skills of Media Professionals is an excellent book for students taking skills courses in the more than 100 ACEJMC-accredited journalism and mass communication programs across the United States. It would also greatly benefit those enrolled in advanced or specialized reporting courses, including courses dedicated solely to teaching data skills.

A new guide to the mechanisms and principles behind the world's most common abnormal heart rhythm Understanding Atrial Fibrillation begins by providing a detailed explanation of atrial fibrillation's causal mechanisms and builds its exploration from there. Working toward an up-to-date knowledge of the mapping and ablation of atrial fibrillation, its chapters assess the experimental data that has shaped current thoughts on the condition and then outline the best methods with which to interpret that rich but potentially difficult information. This revelatory new guide: Explores hypotheses of multiple drivers and mechanisms co-existing in individual patients Addresses common misperceptions about atrial fibrillation Describes the basic physiology of atrial fibrillation's propagation and reentry Explores the various mechanisms and higher-order dynamics of fibrillation Discusses how to intervene and alter atrial physiology to prevent fibrillation Understanding Atrial Fibrillation is truly an invaluable resource for physicians, fellows, residents, electrophysiology lab staff, and all other practitioners involved in the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation. "This book on atrial fibrillation is a must-read for any physician and/or investigator interested in studying the condition or caring for an AF patient. Dr. Spector takes a critical scientific approach to AF and its mechanisms. This book is a very welcome addition to the field." --Hugh Calkins, MD, Professor of Medicine, Director of Electrophysiology, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, USA "Understanding Atrial Fibrillation is a gem. In less than 150 pages, I learned enough basic science about atrial fibrillation and its physiology to allow me to feel competent reviewing different approaches to its mapping and ablation. Peter Spector has an amazing knack for explaining complex physiology. This little book will sit on the top of my bookshelf." --Kenneth A. Ellenbogen, MD, Kimmerling Professor of Cardiology, VCU School of Medicine, Richmond, VA, USA "The excellent book Understanding Atrial Fibrillation by Dr. Peter Spector refreshingly explains atrial fibrillation as a scientific mystery; the text flows smoothly with sequences of questions and answers that read like a detective story that cannot be put down. From time to time, the reader is led to think that the culprit is found, only to discover in the following chapter that the evidence is not convincing enough and the investigation must continue. The book is a must-read for everyone, novice or expert, interested in developing a deeper understanding of atrial fibrillation." --Omer Berenfeld, PhD, Professor of Internal Medicine, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Center for Arrhythmia Research, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA

  • by Lahire Bernard Lahire
    £17.49

In 2008, the Mus e des Beaux-Arts de Lyon acquired a painting called The Flight into Egypt which was attributed to the French artist Nicolas Poussin. Thought to have been painted in 1657, the painting had gone missing for more than three centuries. Several versions were rediscovered in the 1980s and one was passed from hand to hand, from a family who had no idea of its value to gallery owners and eventually to the museum. A painting that had been sold as a decorative object in 1986 for around 12,000 euros was acquired two decades later by the Mus e des Beaux-Arts de Lyon for 17 million euros. What does this remarkable story tell us about the nature of art and the way that it is valued? How is it that what seemed to be just an ordinary canvas could be transformed into a masterpiece, that a decorative object could become a national treasure? This is a story permeated by social magic the social alchemy that transforms lead into gold, the ordinary into the extraordinary, the profane into the sacred. Focusing on this extraordinary case, Bernard Lahire lays bare the beliefs and social processes that underpin the creation of a masterpiece. Like a detective piecing together the clues in an unsolved mystery he carefully reconstructs the steps that led from the same material object being treated as a copy of insignificant value to being endowed with the status of a highly-prized painting commanding a record-breaking price. He thereby shows that a painting is never just a painting, and is always more than a piece of stretched canvass to which brush strokes of paint have been applied: this object, and the value we attach to it, is also the product of a complex array of social processes with its distinctive institutions and experts that lies behind it. And through the history of this painting, Lahire uncovers some of the fundamental structures of our social world. For the social magic that can transform a painting from a simple copy into a masterpiece is similar to the social magic that is present throughout our societies, in economics and politics as much as art and religion, a magic that results from the spell cast by power on those who tacitly recognize its authority. By following the trail of a single work of art, Lahire interrogates the foundations on which our perceptions of value and our belief in institutions rest and exposes the forms of domination which lie hidden behind our admiration of works of art.
