Child abuse casts a long shadow over the history of childhood. Across the centuries there are numerous accounts of children being beaten, neglected, sexually assaulted, or even killed by those closest to them. This book explores this darker side of childhood history, looking at what constituted cruelty towards children in the past and at the social responses towards it. Focusing primarily on England, it is a history of violence against children in their own homes, covering a large timeframe which extends from medieval times to the present. Undeniably, the experience of children in the past was often brutal, and children were treated with, what seems to contemporary mores, callousness, and cruelty. However, historians have paid far less attention to how the mistreatment of children was understood within its contemporary context. Most parents, both now and in the past, loved their children and there have always been widely shared understandings of the boundaries that separate the acceptable treatment of children from the intolerable and morally wrong. This book will examine how these boundaries have changed and been contested over time and, in doing so, provides a context to the many forms of violence experienced by children in the past.

Will the Richmond Greyhounds become the best versions of themselves? Why is The Fountainhead Ted's favorite book? Does hope really kill you? What does potential smell like? Is doing the right thing ever the wrong thing? Does Nate deserve a headbutt or a second chance? Ted Lasso follows the amiable and relentlessly optimistic Coach Lasso on a quest to rebuild a Premier League London soccer club and lead them to victory. Just one catch: Ted knows next to nothing about the game, having so far coached only American football, and only at the amateur level. He's not what Richmond fans or players want, but he's exactly what they need, opening their eyes to the nature of success, the power of belief, the value of friendship, the importance of self-care, the beauty of forgiveness, and much more. What results is an underdog story for the ages, where a motley crew of quirky and loveable characters form an unlikely community and prove that if you got a little love in your heart, there ain't nothing you can't get through together. Ted Lasso and Philosophy explores the hidden depths beneath the vibrant veneer of the award-winning Apple TV+ sitcom. Blending philosophical sophistication with winsome appreciation of the feel-good comedy, this collection features 20 original essays canvassing the breadth of the series and taking seriously the ideas it presents, including the goal of competition, the role of mental health, sportsmanship, revenge versus justice, the importance of friendship, the imperative of respect for persons, what love looks like, and just how evil tea is. In a nod to the show's many literary allusions, the compilation concludes with a whimsical appendix that catalogs the books most significant to Ted Lasso's themes and characters. If football is life, as Dani Rojas fondly repeats, then this book is a fitting primer. Ted Lasso and Philosophy is for the curious, not judgmental. Sport is quite the metaphor, and we can't wait to unpack it with you.

Explore the forces and movements shaping contemporary Mexican politics and society In Mexico‿s Unscripted Revolutions: Political and Social Change Since 1958, distinguished historian Stephen Lewis offers a well-argued‿and provocative‿presentation of Mexico‿s recent “unofficialâ€? grassroots revolutions. The book explores generational change and youthful rebellion in the 1960s and the emergence of second-wave feminism in the 1970s. It also discusses Mexico‿s uniquely protracted democratic transition, initiated by the hegemonic Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) but pushed forward at critical moments by ordinary citizens, opposition parties, and even armed insurgencies. In clear, accessible prose, the author argues that persistent inequality and authoritarian practices have hobbled Mexico‿s democratic consolidation since 2000. He also provides coverage of the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), who promised peaceful revolution but seemed nostalgic for a return to Mexico‿s populist, authoritarian past. Readers will also find: A revealing examination of racism and classism in Mexico, which persist despite the state‿s celebration of the country‿s Indigenous heritage and its promotion of biological and cultural mixing, known as mestizaje. The provocative suggestion that democratization may have unwittingly contributed to the surge in cartel-related violence. A timely chronicle of how women took advantage of the democratic opening to push for gender quotas in politics, which has produced gender parity today in the national congress and in state legislatures. An overview of Mexico‿s surprising and growing religious diversity, both within the Catholic Church and without. Perfect for undergraduate students studying Mexican and Latin American history and politics, Mexico‿s Unscripted Revolutions: Political and Social Change Since 1958 will also benefit students in Latin American Studies, political science, anthropology, religious studies, and women‿s studies and laypersons with an interest in contemporary Mexico.

From Amazon to Tinder, from Google to Deliveroo, there is no facet of human life which the digital revolution has not streamlined and dematerialised. Its objective was to reduce the cost of physical interactions by forgoing face-to-face interactions, a direct result of the free-market shock of the 1980s, which sought to seamlessly expand the marketplace in every possible dimension. Today, we can be algorithmically entertained, educated, cared for and courted in a way which was impossible in the old industrial society, where institutions structured the social world. Today, these institutions have been replaced by monetised virtual contact. As with the industrial revolution of the past, the digital revolution is creating a new economy and a new sensibility, bringing about a radical revaluation of society and its representations. While obsessed with the search for an efficient management of human relations, the new digital capitalism gives rise to an irrational and impulsive Homo numericus prone to an array of addictive behaviours. Far from producing a new agora, social media produce a radicalization of public debate in which hate-filled speech directed against adversaries becomes the norm. The good news is that these outcomes are not inevitable. Technologies have not taken control of our lives. The digital revolution also offers an alternative path: one that leads to a world in which every word deserves to be listened to, without a transcendent truth hanging over it. Are we able to seize the new opportunities opened up by the digital revolution without succumbing to its dark side?

Can Israelis and Palestinians end their long conflict? Peace deals have been sabotaged by extremists on both sides, and reasons for optimism are increasingly hard to find. In this compelling and timely book, the eminent moral philosopher Jonathan Glover argues one vital step towards progress is to better understand the disturbing psychology of the cycle of violence.Glover explores the psychological flaws that entrap both sides: the urge to respond to wounds or humiliation with backlash; political or religious beliefs held with a rigidity that excludes compromise; and people's identity being shaped by the conflict in ways that make it harder to imagine or even desire alternatives. Drawing on the history of comparable conflicts that eased over time, Glover proposes some ways to gradually weaken the grip of this psychology.Israelis and Palestinians is essential reading for anyone concerned by the ongoing violence in the Middle East.

Britain's first Labour government took office on 22 January 1924. Its centenary provides an opportunity to reassess the party's performance over the last 100 years, and with an election pending, the character and purpose of the modern party.Labour defined the dominant political settlement of much of the Twentieth Century: the welfare state. It has achieved much in pursuit of material change, social reform and equality. It has challenged patriarchy, racism and the legacy of imperialism, promoted human rights and delivered democratic and constitutional renewal. Yet any honest assessment must acknowledge a century littered with failures and missed opportunities. In this compelling book, Jon Cruddas, one of the country's foremost experts on Labour politics, details the vivid personalities and epic factional battles, the immense achievements and profound disappointments that define a century of Labour. Uniquely framed around competing visions of socialist justice within the Party, he provides a way to rethink Labour history, the divisions and factions on the left and to reassess key figures at the helm of the movement from Keir Hardie through to Keir Starmer.
