The evening was approaching and while life was easy, like Sunday morning outside on the streets of the thriving metropolis that was Ashland City, Tennessee, population 1026, nay 1027 cause into this world, in a small clinic on Main Street, the cries of a scrawny dark haired, blue eyed baby could be heard. Mama wanted to make sure that I had a Biblical name. Somehow I think she knew in her heart what lay ahead and thought a Biblical name might soften the blow or maybe she thought Jesus would look on me more favorably. Who knows but for whatever reason Joseph it was. Joseph Ricky Reynolds- that was me and so my story began. My story is about how God took a bad decision and turned it into a Miracle that would change the course of my life. Ricky and his wife Diane are now attending First United Pentecostal Church in Nashville, TN. Bishop Ron Becton and Pastor Roy Duke.

  • by Susan Oringel
    £15.99

These poems traverse the seam between love and struggle, memory and what is palpable, to create a world where everything is at stake."As the title promises, Susan Oringel's Carnevale is a 'festival before the last.' In a swirling dance of life and death, a heartrending narrative unfurls. Nostalgic poems selected from Oringel's chapbook, My Coney Island, combine with new work to describe celebration and mourning over the span of decades. The world moves from the assassination of President Kennedy to the carnage of 9/11. A season of bereavements culminates in the unexpected death of a lover. Lyrical free verse captures the emotion of losing things that, like a child's run-away balloon, cannot be recovered. Yet, amidst the farewell to flesh, doors open. 'Joys and sorrows move like the wind / from house to house, lights burning in the windows.' In poignant dreams of Coney Island, the author imagines the surf's roar and a return to the mythic place where she began and will begin again."-Jackie Craven, author of Secret Formulas & Techniques Of The Masters"Come read, taste, feel Susan Oringel's Carnevale! From schav to Nathan's hotdogs, to freshly baked whole grain bread and ice cream with a cherry on top, come experience Coney Island and 9/11 and the life and deaths of family and lovers, in language vivid, colorful, and bittersweet. You will know that we suddenly all speak 'the same language' which moves 'like music from heart to heart.' And we know that we are all 'tethered? First to our own bodies, then to others, to life, and finally to death.' Come live and love in Carnevale!"-Larissa Shmailo, author of Dora / Lora. "The poems of Carnevale grow in intensity as they go--as recollection grows closer in time and intimacy, they invite the joys of Eros in, and then, with 'the awful fact of after...' deal so movingly with loss and the transit of grief: 'What's left, a love that flares inside...' And, in their strong cadences and the eloquent parallels of their images, the poems open that interior to us, 'And then begin again.'"-Eleanor Wilner, Before Our Eyes: New and Selected Poems

Each of these contributors come from all walks of life - Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and even our straight allies - and give hope that you too can make it through the things that are afflicting you.A lot can be learned from taking a glimpse at the past. Beginning some fifty years after Major Dade's command met their demise at the hands of a much larger force of Seminoles, notable citizens began to press both Florida and Federal legislators to acquire the battle site for everlasting preservation. Steadily increasing through the first two decades of the twentieth century, an impressive legion of supporters developed to include politicians, jurists, historians, business leaders, civic clubs, and prominent national figures such as General Douglas MacArthur. All these, along with strong public voices fanned by both local and out-of-state newspapers, finally succeeded in convincing the State of Florida to purchase eighty acres that encompassed most of the battle area on September 29, 1921. Dade was only the second property that had been set aside by the State for perpetual protection. Although it was a governmental acquisition, for more than thirty years "Dade Memorial Park" was actively maintained and managed by the citizens of Bushnell and Sumter County themselves. Today Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is a unique member of the multiple National Gold Medal Award-winning Florida State Parks system and remains loved by its neighbors as "our little park." Steven Rinck served eight years as president of the Seminole Wars Foundation, and still maintains active roles with that not-for-profit group. An avid student of history for all of his life, the retired Pasco County teacher and principal is past president of the Dade Battlefield Society, a trustee of the Fort King Heritage Foundation and a member of the Florida Historical Society. He is also active with historical societies in Sumter, Hernando, and Pasco counties. Steven is a consultant for the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village and a proud supporter of the Seminole Tribe's Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. He reenacts at Second Seminole War, Civil War, and World War II events, and enjoys performing first-person historical impressions for school, military and civic groups. Beyond the Battle is Steven's first published literary endeavor, and he is excited that the personal stories of sacrifice and perseverance that were made in order to bring proper recognition to Dade Battlefield are at last being told.
