The George W Bush Administration has blasted into the White House proclaiming a national energy crisis which no one except Mr Bush and Mr Cheney, both former energy company executives, can detect. California''s blackouts seem more the result of profiteering by energy companies and their fellow travellers in the California legislature than of a national problem. Yet the White House sees a crisis which either does not exist or they are inventing one to pump up the already substantial revenues of their past, present and probably future buddies in the energy business. The book presents analyses which substantiate the fact that energy policies have been around for sometime and perhaps deserve a more serious response than ham-handed profit taking.
This 7 volume encyclopedia set presents important research on linguistics. Some of the topics discussed herein include speech and language disorders, language development, American Sign Language, voice therapy, and aphasia.
This book is a compilation of CRS reports on electric power. The large-scale damage caused by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria is examined in the context of policy options Congress may consider in order to help remediate such damage to the electrical grid in the future. Alternative electric power structures are examined for their ability to meet the post-Hurricane-Maria needs of Puerto Rico. The proposed Environmental Protection Agency plan to lower carbon emissions by providing each state with a carbon reduction target number.
This book is a compilation of CRS reports on Ukraine. The collection opens by discussing the 2014 protests of the Ukranian governments postponement of an associate agreement that would facilitate a firm relationship with the European Union. Also discussed is the 2016 uprising in Maidan Square and the 2017 collapse of the government of Viktor Yanukovych. Russias alleged part in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 is examined in the context of the security concerns this preempted. In closing, the United States sanctions on Russia are reviewed.
This book is a compilation of CRS reports on the Small Business Administrations (SBAs) Small Business Investment Company (SBIC). The opening report discusses the programs statistics, structure and operations. The SBAs 7(a) loan guaranty program is discussed as it is one of the most significant programs aimed at supporting small businesses. Other SBA programs are described later, some of which include disaster assistance, contracting programs and capital investment programs. A program is also discussed which seeks to aid small businesses owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. This collection examines the SBAs budget as well as recent developments and future trends. Economic research is examined to identify which business models create the most jobs and then analyzed for possible implications for Congress. The book concludes by discussing bills introduced to amend the Small Business Lending Fund.
This book is a compilation of CRS reports on the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant in the United States. TANF was formed in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, and it imparts federal grants to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the territories and American Indian tribes for a variety of benefits, services, and activities to combat the effects of childhood economic disadvantage. Some frequently asked questions regarding TANF are addressed is conjunction with recommendations for the future.
This book is a compilation of CRS reports on abortion in the United States. The first chapter discusses the way legislation seeking to limit/ban abortions in midpregnancy has brought to attention the number of women choosing to have such procedures. The second report focuses on April 2018 in Mississippi, when the enforcement of a law prohibiting abortion on fetuses with a gestational age of more than 15 weeks was halted by a federal court. This prohibition is of particular interest to congress because of the early gestational age. The third chapter discusses those policies which restrict the United States funding of abortion and family planning activities abroad, which has become a significant issue in foreign assistance. Later, the court''s rulings since Roe and Doe are examined in the fourth chapter in the context of the governmental actions designed to nullify or limit their effect(s). In the fifth report, the authors discuss recently renewed questions concerning to what extent the government may impose abortion restrictions on aliens. The concluding chapter aims to address whether the constitutional right to abortion applies to an unaccompanied alien minor who is apprehended at the border.
Acute myeloid leukemia is the most common adult acute leukemia, but its etiology in individual patients is poorly understood. An increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia may be inherited (through congenital hematologic diseases and syndromes or germline disorders) or be acquired due to a lifetime of exposure to environmental or chemical agents, or genotoxic stress. In this collection, the authors explore risk factors for acute myeloid leukemia, newer epidemiologic studies on the connections between these risks and clinical phenotypes and outcomes of the disease. The subsequent chapter evaluates different prognostic factors and stratifications of risk that have been published in the attempt to assess the influence of acute myeloid leukemia progression on the overall survival of myelodysplastic syndromes patients, evaluating them in a population-based registry. Many acute myeloid leukemia patients cannot tolerate standard chemotherapy due to its high toxicity. A milder therapy for acute myeloid leukemia has long been sought after, and until now the only successful clinical application has been all-trans-retinoic acid-based therapy for just one subtype of acute myeloid leukemia, acute promyelocytic leukaemia. The concluding chapter aims to address other therapeutic candidates.
Plant-insect interaction has remained stable for over 300 million years, a fact that correlates with these groups capacity to connect with their counterparts for reproduction, protection and feeding, among other things. Focus on Arthropods Research opens with an analysis of the various factors that influence these communities. Some studies suggest that genetic, chemical and morphological variability of host plants are the most influential factors. The following chapter examines whether it is possible to infer the types and durations of embryonized larval stages in higher decapod species based on equivalent free-living stages of dendrobranchiate prawns, assuming the dendrobranchiate development pattern is ancestral to that of the entire Decapoda. Stage-specific development times of dendrobranchiate crustaceans were obtained from previous studies and analysed across species to quantify the proportions of total development spent in each stage and phase. Some arthropods, like the beetle Scaurus punctatus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) are considered beneficial in terrestrial ecosystems of southern Europe due to their detritivore activity. There is little information available on their parasites and their effect on the beetles. Thus, the closing chapter provides new insight on aspects such as epizootiology, biology and the impact of gregarines in these insects.
In this collection, the authors evaluate the thermal performance of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system for cooling a typical household in Tunisia. For this purpose, a complete GSHP system model was built by using TRNSYS simulation program, taking into account the hot climatic conditions of northern Tunisia. The authors also discuss metal organic framework (MOF) material, a new class of adsorbent material that has high surface area, high pore volume, highly tunable structural properties and uniform pore size. Heat powered adsorption heat pumps offer the advantage of using waste heat sources and renewable thermal energy, thus reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The following chapter presents the major situations where heating and cooling demands could occur simultaneously and be satisfied by heat pumps. The heat pump performance expressed in terms of coefficient of performance and exergy efficiency is then presented for the subcritical vapor-compression thermodynamic cycle. Finally, the integration of such systems in buildings and processes is discussed. Next, the authors seek to demonstrate some antecedents of and technical information on GHPS (Geothermal Heat Pump Systems) on the world, and particulary Mexico. The results of the included study show that sand temperature depends on physical parameters such as grain size, grain shape, quarzt grains amount, moisture content and grain color. The final chapter describes alternative options for heat pump placement indoors and outdoors. The described examples focus on the modelling and measurement of noise levels resulting from heat pumps in the project designing stage and the operation stage.
