This book is the result of research carried out between 2011 and 2015 on strategies for reading comprehension with 6th grade students. It was based on experimental research in psycholinguistics with a group of students from Ibirama, in Santa Catarina, in the form of a workshop in 2014 as part of an outreach project run by the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina. The thirty 6th grade students were divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG). The experiment was divided into three stages: diagnosis, workshop and post-test. The diagnosis was designed to outline the students' profile as readers, list the reading strategies they used and their reading comprehension skills. The workshop took place only with the EG, over ten meetings using instructional reading activities focused on teaching strategies. After the workshop, a post-test was administered to analyze whether there had been any changes in the competence and use of strategies by the EG and CG participants.

Dear Readers, We invite you to permeate the advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) from the perspective of educational changes, especially in the implementation of semi-presential courses in higher education. Connectivism emerges in this context as a new educational approach. This theory proposed by George Siemens and Steven Downes (2004) points out that knowledge is distributed in a network of connections and that learning therefore consists of the ability to build these networks and circulate in them, thus developing the ability to reflect, decide and share. In this investigative journey, new perspectives imposed by the connectivist theory emerged that were necessary for a better understanding: the constant traffic through learning theories for comparison purposes, the heutagogical and andragogical models of learning, knowledge in networks and the instructional design of distance learning courses. Thus, the approach relied on the theoretical contribution and ideas of Siemens, Downes, Zezina Belan, Vani Moreira Kensky, Andrea Filatro, Jose Manoel Moran, Augusto de Franco, Jean Piaget, Skinner and others who provided an interdisciplinary character to the research.

Concern for the environment is no longer the exclusive preserve of non-governmental organizations and environmental groups. This concern has become part of companies' development policies. In this sense, they are seeking to adopt the best performance in environmental and social matters, in order to better articulate the benefits and risks of their activities, in response to the new demands of society. The biggest challenge facing companies in environmental matters is the need to make economic growth compatible with environmental preservation. As a social science, accounting is influenced by social, political and economic changes, so it tends to keep pace with the evolution of society. Users are increasingly demanding information of various kinds, including environmental financial information. As the financial statements did not reflect companies' social and environmental behavior in accounting terms, they were forced to develop and disclose additional information. In recent years, European and national regulations have been introduced to standardize this accounting treatment.

In the process of social reproduction, society is confronted with different projects for the use and meaning of environmental resources, and there are disputes over incompatible interests in the environment. During these disputes, social actors try to legitimize their discourses and many collective actions can be taken - including lawsuits. This dissertation studies public civil lawsuits involving environmental conflicts in the state of Rio de Janeiro between 2008 and 2014. The main agents, causes and characteristics of judicialized environmental conflicts are identified, and the power relations involved in these conflicts are discussed. The patterns of conduct and solutions are investigated, as well as the bonds established during the dispute and the existence of an unequal incidence of environmental damage on a certain portion of the population.

The aim of this book is to promote reflection on the importance of integrating evil into the individuation process of contemporary women, looking at the implications of not getting closer to this evil - intrinsic to every human being - and remaining in a puerile and naive state of personality. The author reviews the literature on the theme of evil as a dark, unknown element, relegated to the unconscious, as well as a negative masculine force present in women - their negative animus. The book reflects on the feminine as an archetype, acting in the psychic dynamics of women, specifically, establishing a correlation between them based on the approach of Jungian psychology. The author makes a psychological analysis of some tales that feature female protagonists, such as Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty, from Beauty and the Beast, illustrating the archetypal journey of women in their individuation process.

Hemoglobinopathy S is an entity that includes all congenital hemolytic anemias in which the gene coding for Hb S is inherited. Worldwide there are an estimated 300 million people recognized as hemoglobin S carriers. There are an estimated 300 million people in the world recognized as carriers of hemoglobin S (Hb S), a condition resulting from the substitution of glutamic acid for valine at position 6 of the β-globin gene on the short arm of chromosome 11, which are characterized by the inheritance of a normal hemoglobin A gene from one parent and an abnormal mutated gene from the other parent (AS), unlike homozygous individuals in which both mutated genes are present (SS).

Barker's hypothesis of fetal programming for chronic non-communicable diseases proposes that an adverse environmental stimulus such as nutrient or oxygen restriction during a critical period of fetal development induces structural and functional effects in the developing organism, optimizing the growth of key organs such as the brain, at the expense of other organs such as the beta islets of the pancreas. In anticipation of an extra-uterine environment with low calorie intake, the fetus makes adaptive changes that lead to metabolic alterations aimed at guaranteeing a better chance of survival. Despite the considerable amount of evidence accumulated on this "intrauterine programming", the mechanisms determining this programming are still not completely clear. Considering its morbidity and mortality worldwide, the search for knowledge that can lead to earlier identification of patients at risk could lead to the promotion of significant changes, not only in improving the health conditions of these individuals and future generations, but also in reducing the costs of the Health System.

Today's organizations are present in the knowledge era, but the dissemination of the relevance of organizational knowledge management is still incipient. Many managers are stuck in old patterns of management models and structures, seeing machines, financial capital and technologies as fundamental assets for the organization's competitiveness. There is a long way to go for today's organizations to adapt to the characteristics of the new organizations of the knowledge era. Paradigms in terms of management methods must be changed, as must the understanding of the assets that generate value for businesses, which have moved from factors linked to capital, labour and technology, to the intangible knowledge of members, which through organizational learning is made explicit and can be used as a competitive advantage and input for organizational innovation. These changes occur gradually, involving the organizational culture and the individuals within it.

This book analyzes human capital development policies in Angola, and a case study of Cunene Province. Significant investments have been made in infrastructure and skills upgrading, but there are challenges that affect development. The lack of continuity in local educational training results in students fleeing to other regions, leading to a loss of talent. The lack of comprehensive data and local experts hinders research and limits knowledge of the local reality. There is resistance to hiring professionals from other regions, due to nepotism and tribalism, excluding qualified talent. Lack of proper planning in building infrastructure and professional training results in inefficient spending. The creation of a body to manage local staff and plan training is recommended, as well as continuity policies. Reliable statistical data is essential, as are higher education institutes to absorb locally trained technicians. Overcoming these challenges requires coordinated actions to promote adequate training, appreciation of local professionals and efficient use of available resources.

Family businesses play an important economic role worldwide. Their performance is of particular interest to researchers because of their resilience. This performance can be influenced by the family's involvement in the business. This involvement may be in the management of the company, in its shareholding or in both simultaneously. Based on this observation, the aim of this book is to measure the influence of each level of family involvement according to different performance indicators. Following a literature review aimed at establishing a theoretical basis for the concepts of family business, governance and performance, a quantitative study was carried out on a sample of 260 Belgian and Luxembourg SMEs (both family-owned and not). The results showed that family management leads to better performance, but not that companies managed and controlled simultaneously by the family are more successful. This book contains results and practical implications that may be useful to managers and owners of family businesses.

This book presents a series of considerations on Physical Education for Young People and Adults, a teaching modality that has been undergoing transformations largely due to changes in its audience, which is increasingly younger and less adult. This heterogeneity makes this group special and presents teachers with certain difficulties. After all, how to act with such different interests? I bring up considerations on how to act, proposing an education also based on aesthetics, on pleasure, which does not inhibit MOVEMENT - the undisputed hallmark of Physical Education. In order to do this, I tried to carry out a comprehensive study, which included bibliographical and ethnographic research, as well as my 15 years as a public school teacher. I hope that the content of this book will be useful and bring you reflections on the complex act of education.

Poultry and pig meat, as well as egg consumption, represent an excellent source of protein and amino acids to satisfy a significant fraction of human nutritional requirements. With this in mind, this book deals with the physiological characteristics of poultry digestion and absorption and discusses how the addition of fats and organic Selenium to the diet can improve the quality of these animals' products. On the other hand, it also takes an in-depth look at how exogenous enzymes act on the anti-nutritional factors present in feed that cannot be digested due to the lack of endogenous enzyme production by the birds. Nutrition influences, for example, the synthesis and metabolism of many hormones involved in animal metabolism and performance. These effects are exerted by specific nutrients, nutritional energy status and changes in food consumption. For this reason, this book also discusses aspects related to nutrigenomics so that it is possible to advance our understanding of the relationships between nutrition, genetics and the productive and reproductive performance of animals.

In researching the possibility of partisanship in Brazilian newspapers in relation to tensions between Israel and neighbouring countries, we looked at the different editorial positions in the international news sections of the Brazilian newspapers Zero Hora, from Porto Alegre, and O Estado do Paraná, from Curitiba, which ceased circulation in February 2011. The assumption was that there was interference in the process of selecting news and reports on the conflicts between Arabs and Israelis. In other words, Zero Hora favoured pro-Israel editions, while the Curitiba newspaper maintained an editorial line in favour of the Arabs. The aim was to present the engineering behind the construction of journalistic discourse, defining the role of editors and the duties imposed within newsrooms. This is the result of master's research, defended in 2008 at Unimarco in São Paulo, Brazil.

Modern society is increasingly exposed to stressful situations on a daily basis. Neuro-excitatory, metabolic, cardiovascular and even inflammatory responses can become hyper-reactive to these situations, increasing the chances of various physiological dysfunctions, especially cardiovascular ones. It has been shown that a single exercise session carried out before stressful situations can be useful in attenuating hyper-reactivity of blood pressure to stress. Among the methods used to assess cardiovascular reactivity to stress is the cold pressor test (CPT). However, heart rate variability (HRV) responses to the CPT have been little investigated. Although there is evidence that a higher level of physical fitness is related to lower stress reactivity, the relationship between muscle strength levels and cardiovascular reactivity to the CPT has not yet been investigated. In this way, we address the effect of maintaining good levels of strength as a strategy to reduce the physiological effects caused by stress.
