Bis heute ist erstaunlich wenig über die alltäglichen Arbeitsabläufe und Tätigkeiten frühneuzeitlicher Botschaften bekannt. In der vorliegenden Publikation beschäftigt sich die Autorin daher mit der Frage, welche Handlungsspielräume Botschafter und Residenten besaßen, um ihre Amtsausübung individuell auszugestalten, welche Strategien sie befolgten und welche Auswirkungen diese auf die Arbeit der Botschaft hatten. Als Untersuchungsgegenstand dient die kaiserliche Botschaft in Venedig während der Regierung Maria Theresias, eine der ältesten habsburgischen Botschaften. Durch eine Kombination aus institutionsgeschichtlichem Ansatz und akteurszentriertem Zugriff wurde die Tätigkeit der Botschaft analysiert. Somit konnte ein umfassendes Bild sowohl von den Rahmenbedingungen als auch den individuellen Tätigkeiten der Botschafter rekonstruiert und ausgewertet werden.
