L¿auteur n¿ancre complètement son oeuvre dans aucune tradition, aucun courant ou mode défini, et propose des textes récalcitrants à toute tentative de classification. En invitant régulièrement le symbole dans un univers vraisemblable, McCann ébranle parfois le réalisme de ses textes. De plus, en logeant dans son oeuvre celles et ceux qui ne trouvent pas leur place au centre du tourbillon de l¿ère qui est la nôtre, il prend le contrepied du discours historiographique dominant. Ainsi, la notion de rupture apparaît comme une clé de lecture, et son étude permet de comprendre qüau plan métatextuel, elle inclut plus aisément les lecteurs au sein même des textes, lesquels représentent des espaces d¿accueil, de véritables forces centripètes qui les ramènent au coeur de l¿expérience littéraire. Cet ouvrage ne s¿intéresse donc pas seulement à la création et à la constitution des textes, mais également à leur réception. Ils pourraient être perçus comme autant de synapses assurant la transmission de l¿expérience, qui constituent des outils permettant aux lecteurs de repenser leur être-au-monde, notamment à travers l¿expérience de l¿empathie.

Innerhalb der Literatur des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt sich das gehäufte Auftreten des Wortes «Glückseligkeit», was auf eine zentrale Rolle der unter diesem Begriff gefassten Bedeutung im Denken der Zeitgenossen schliessen lässt. Gleichwohl ist diese Kategorie bisher noch nicht als eine zentrale Wertvorstellung literaturhistorisch untersucht, sondern lediglich in kurzen Worten hervorgehoben worden. Diese Lücke versucht die Arbeit von J. Schmidt-Neubauer nun zu schliessen, indem sie an exemplarischen Beispielen eine erste Aufarbeitung der Bedeutung des Begriffes «Glückseligkeit» für die literarische Produktion des 18. Jahrhunderts leistet.

Gustav Meyrink war an der Wende von der Neuromantik zum Expressionis- mus und Nachexpressionismus hin einer der interessantesten Prosa-Erzähler der deutschen Literatur. Sein Werk weist mehrere Facetten auf und reicht vor allem von der grotesken, kulturkritischen und sozialen Satire bis zum Versuch der Aufschliessung und literarischen Bewältigung okkulter und mystischer Phänomene verschiedenster Art und Herkunft. Die Meyrink-Bibliographie von Evelin Aster unternimmt zum ersten Mal den systematischen Versuch, alle Werke, ob öffentlich gedruckt oder nicht, zu erfassen und anzuführen. Auch eine erste Erfassung des Briefwechsels von Meyrink wird hier gegeben.

Ausgehend von den rezeptionstheoretischen Konzepten von Jauss und Iser wird versucht, anhand von Falladas letzem Roman «Jeder stirbt für sich allein» (1946) die von ihm dort (bewusst/unbewusst?) verwendeten spezifischen Mittel der Leserlenkung, aufgegliedert in Sympathie- und Aktivitätssteuerung, zu eruieren, analysieren und kategorisieren. Die Hypothesen ihrer mutmasslichen Leserwirkung werden sodann mit den an 7 Schulklassen im Grossraum Zürich via Fragebogen und Diskussion gewonnenen Daten kontrastiert. Zwei weitere Kapitel beleuchten die spezifischen Eigenarten dieses ersten in Deutschland entstandenen Widerstandsromans zum einen von seinen charakteristischen Unterschieden her zu Anna Seghers weltberühmten Exilroman «Das siebte Kreuz» (1942), zum andern von den teils erheblichen Veränderungen seiner Verfilmung (1975).
