This sketchbook gives you the opportunity to learn how Harper captured his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. For each of the twenty-eight birds featured herein, weve included a four-page presentation. On the first page, you will find line drawings that show a three-stage process for recreating Harpers image. The line drawings build on each other the first one presents the most basic shapes, the second further develops the form of the bird, and the third com-pletes the image with all the details.

The Addams Family: An Evilution is the first book to trace The Addams Family history, presenting more than 200 cartoons created by Charles Addams (American, 1912-1988) throughout his prolific career; many have never been published before. Text by H. Kevin Miserocchi, director of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, offers a revealing chronology of each character's evolution, while Addams's own incisive character descriptions, originally penned for the benefit of the television show producers, introduce each chapter. As the presence of the Family continues to permeate generation after generation, and in celebration of the Broadway musical debuting in 2010, this book reminds us where these oddly lovable characters came from and, in doing so, offers a lasting tribute to one of America's greatest humorists. Includes more than 200 cartoons (approximately 50 are published here for the first time), many in color.

The master creator of finely crosshatched illustrations and sinisterly amusing tales, Edward Gorey (American, 1925-2000) got his start in publishing by designing book covers for such New York houses as Doubleday, Grosset & Dunlap, Vintage Books, and later Random House. Today, his prodigious output of hundreds of dust jackets and paperback covers evidences his distinctive flair for design and his extraordinary ability to portray the essence of the books that came his way. Edward Gorey: His Book Cover Art & Design features a broad selection of his work, created from 1953 to 2000. In his essay, Steven Heller offers an insightful overview of Gorey's book cover art and design. He writes, "Successful cover design requires the expertise of an artist, typographer, poster designer, and logo maker. Many book design specialists were incapable of designing a cover or jacket with the same Gorey aplomb, even if they tried."

In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States, this reissue of Women of the World: A Global Collection of Art presents 174 artworks by 174 women from 174 countries, combining to present an aggregate, powerful statement about the continuity of women's struggles and accomplishments worldwide. Women of the World is an affirmation of survival of the will, of commonality that subsumes difference, of courage under fire, and of grace in adversity. In the 1990s, artist and world traveler Claudia DeMonte posed a question-What image represents "woman"? She invited women to create a work of art that expressed in their view the essential quality of woman. After three years spent locating the artists through embassies and various professional connections, she assembled the works in a historically unique exhibition that traveled internationally and was documented by this book. DeMonte saw the project as a means to show the differences in how art is made and perceived, and it achieves that goal. But there was another, unforeseen, and joyous effect of the accumulation of images. Here, the visionary and the everyday come together to render a global image of female experience. Traditional art in ancient media gleefully joins with multimedia constructions that sing or glow. Individually superb, these works of art together are a moving expression of self from people whose voices have rarely been heard. First published in 2000, Women of the World is just as meaningful today.
