Published in this Volume 6 of Iswaydaarsi (exchange) series, is a collection of five short stories English novelists and story writers. Each story has been translated into Somali by Rashid Sheikh Abdullahi and Mohamed Hassan. The original stories in English and their translated Somali version are both included in the book. Also included are the translated works, into English of visiting artists to the Somali Week Festival 2012.The Iswaydaarsi (exchange) series offers translations into Somali of English works by Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edith Nesbit and Oscar Wilde; and from Somali poetry by Said Salah, Muuse Cali Faruur, Cabdi Yuusuf Xasan "Cabdi-dhuux", Faysal Cumar Mushteeg and Xasan Qowdhan Yuusuf into English. The series intends to provide knowledge of international classical literature to the Somali speaking readership, alongside Somali literature and wisdom.

Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac "Gaarriye" (1951-2012) was a well-known Somali speaking contemporary poet. Originally from Hargeysa, Somaliland he was among many of his contemporaries living in Mogadishu in the 1970s, and whose works are credited with having great influence upon the prevalent sociopolitical situation in the country today. Thoughy largely motivated and moved by patriotic sentiments they were also sympathetic to the leftist political movements which were internationally popular in that era. Many themes such as an indefatigable advocacy of human rights, freedom of thought and expression, and a vehement hatred of all forms of human degradation were so brilliantly articulated in his poetry.In this volume, alongside biography material, is a selection of some of Gaarriye's most lauded poetry, such as his master pieces on 'Nuclear Weapons', 'Nelson Mandela', 'Watergate' and 'Zimbabwe'. This book is the fifth in the "Iswaydaarsi" (Exchange) series which aspires to translate Somali literature and wisdom into other languages, and at the same time providing specific knowledge of international classical literature to the Somali speaking readership.

On May 18th, 1991, Somaliland embarked on a new path in order to manage its own destiny as a sovereign state and for 20 years the people of Somaliland have demonstrated their strong commitment in achieving the goal of independence through democratic values and a rejection of extremism; four peaceful and fair parliamentary and presidential elections, as well as a popular referendum have been held. In addition the local economy shows signs of hope, and the already announced forthcoming presence of international banks in the country will further help Somaliland to trade with the world.This first volume of Somaliland - the way forward documents the recent advances in Somaliland in peace, development, good governance and economic revival. A number of critical issues, including the state of law and order, justice and rights, national planning, democracy and political maturity all built on the centuries-old traditions of a nomadic Muslim society are explored.

The articles in this book are the result of the First Linguistics Workshop: Somali Language and Literature at the Hargeysa Cultural Centre in December 2015.The objective of the workshop was to facilitate the sharing of current work among scholars in the field of Somali language studies through presentation of their ongoing projects. This also allowed current work to be opened to a wider audience and for students, journalists and writers to hear about some of the issues which are of current interest in Somali language studies. There was a deliberate attempt to draw people engaged in both more strictly linguistic matters together with those whose interests are more as practitioners with language, such as local writers and journalists, and also to include those whose primary focus is literature.This led to a diverse range of both presentations and opinions on those presentations, which is represented also in this volume. The views on any matter are those of the individual authors and readers are left to determine for themselves to what extent they agree or disagree with points made. The more strictly linguistic papers include presentations on aspects of Somali phonology, morphology and syntax. Sociolinguistics is also represented as is recent work on lexicography and the use of information technology in Somali languagestudies. There are two papers which consider literature from different perspectives.

Qaran iyo Qabiil by Rashid Sh. Abdillahi is a profound study of how clannism is anathema to modern Somali State development. The author examines how Somali traditional norms and values are directly antagonistic to the process of state building, which is one of the overriding issues facing the Somali nation in this critical juncture of its national history.This is a well researched study of the state versus clannism and constitutes a major contribution to the field of Somali politics in these testing and turbulent times. The book is highly recommended for all those interested in the current Somali political thought in the Horn of Africa.

In this well researched study, Farah A Gamuute reveals the various uses of the metrical unit in Somali Poetry and the interaction between the metrical unit, music and the language. 64 genres or measures were identified and fully analysed; the number of genres possible in Somali poetry is still being counted and three new genres have been identified while awaiting publication of this volume.
