An innocent prank has serious consequences for twelve-year-old Ben who wants to show his cowboy father and the surly cow boss that he's ready to take more responsibility. Roping a ground squirrel was not the way to do it. Caught in the midst of their conflict, Ben comes to terms with his life. Ben is impatient to grow up and fill the footprints his father leaves on the Nevada cattle ranch where he works as the 'top hand.' Meeting the high expectations of his father is difficult enough, without the enmity expressed by Fred, the old cow boss, who seems to hate him. His Great Idea of roping a ground squirrel takes a disastrous turn that results in big trouble for him and good-natured teasing from all the cowboys in the bunkhouse. Hoping to help Ben get back into the good graces of both his father and Fred, these working 'buckaroos' teach him some old-time western skills that will help him take responsibility for the trouble he has caused. Ben grows up very quickly when he's put in a position where only he can save Fred's life, earning the respect he craves from everyone on the ranch. This book accurately portrays an American subculture: ranch life in the Great Basin of the United States. Here, cowboy culture and practices reflect the strong influence of the Spanish vaquero traditions of the Old West. Customs and terms specific to this area and still in use today are defined in a glossary in the back of the book.

George Gascoigne was one of the leading writers of Tudor England - an accomplished poet, a dramatist and novelist. But he was also accused of being a ruffian, a killer, a spy and a "godless person". This major new biography, the first in almost a century, traces Gascoigne's journey from rural Bedfordshire to the Court of Elizabeth I, via Cambridge and the Inns of Court. It follows his career as a soldier in the Low Countries, as an entertainer at Kenilworth Castle during the legendary royal visit of 1575, and as a state intelligence agent. It also examines in detail Gascoigne's premature and mysterious death in Stamford. Apart from his swashbuckling life and his clashes with censorship, Gascoigne had a very modern concept of himself as a writer, viewing the book as simultaneously a cultural and commercial product. Over two centuries before the great romantic poets, he had a towering sense of self. His life and personality was something to be written about and marketed as a thing interesting and important in its own right. This was much more than being simply proud of his ancestry. To be a Gascoigne gave him pride and confidence. But Gascoigne was not interested in promoting himself as the latest bearer of the family coat of arms. He was not a Gascoigne but the Gascoigne: a Gascoigne for all time.

Poetry for the esthetics of absurdity, for the sardonic and the ribald, and for love lost. and then lust.A WORD OF CAUTION: This book possesses instances of unrestrained sensuality, farcical violence, philosophical misunderstandings, and fairy tales so textured with twisted morality, they breed odd questions, puerile illusions, no easy solutions. This is a catalogue - a poetic sampler. And yet, if the diverging pieces of Locomotive Worm originate from a single source, it stems from the melancholic dissolution of romantic love and the subsequent drive to a perverse vindication. In the real world, we don't always heal the way we wish, and this book is a reflection on the unexpected flashes of such recuperative incite.Locomotive Worm offers a different reading experience. First of all, it is prose poetry. But it is also a guidebook on how to approach the collection itself. Certain poems offer directions on how to read them. Events that happen in some pieces show up again in others, from different angles, relinquishing contradictory results. Ultimately, the pages brandish a unique pagination that insinuates multiple reading chronologies. This book is a circuit of stations that fix each piece to the whole network in varied ways, making new connections with each reading.Beyond these formal permutations, this collection of poetry is a sincere exploration of poetic themes neglected for far too long. Forget about love and beauty! The ludicrous and sardonic can be as compelling, often funnier, and far more exciting. Locomotive Worm demands for the reader to drop the vase of esthetics into the black and white gutter of its text and let the pieces spill out into your opening perception.
