"...there's more than enough wonder and dread for any fan of horror or dark fantasy. A must-read for lovers of these genres." Jason J. McCuiston, author of Project Notebook and The Last Star Warden series "We have to be careful when we walk in the open." So begins the title story, and so begins this ominous collection of tales from settings around the world and times both close and long past. We are taken into realms terror, dragged by the hand into haunted places and minds, meeting characters whose fates could be our own if we aren't careful. A lonely woman on a cruise will not find what she's looking for until she realizes why she is on this ocean voyage. A man visits a remote village in Africa to learn that some monsters aren't quite what he expected them to be. An unfinished opera becomes a man's obsession to find those lost notes, no matter the means by which they are found. A clumsy but meaningful art piece by a blind girl becomes the bane of the art examiner who interviews candidates for a prestigious art school. A portal is opened, a poker game is played, a mine is operated, and dolls are fabricated. Each story opens a new conflict, a new strife, a new view of both the extraordinary and the banal elements of our world. You will be mystified and intrigued, terrified and horrified, all as you turn the pages and discover these stories of dark imaginings. "The author has tucked a burr in our souls and left us itching and squirming. And that is as it should be." Stephen Kimmerling, peer review "Mr. Travieso-Diaz's short stories are like the bloody news photograph you know you should not look at, but click on anyway... [he] leads you to the realization that terror begins in the familiar places, the hearth, the school, and the office, metastasizes into the terrors that haunt us collectively, and transforms banal, complacent souls into monsters." Alex Ferrate "The reader will enjoy Travieso-Diaz's wide-ranging knowledge, reflected in the subject matters of these tales. If you like Faustian bargains, there's a story for you. If your taste runs to Dantean Purgatory, you'll find something to please. Readers who seek ethnic and historic scope, with a large dose of the gruesome, will no doubt be satisfied. Some tales are definitely morbid, some merely ending in an ironic twist. There is a grim tale for everyone!" Roxanne Greenstein

To fill the power vacuum, giant multinational corporations, backed by wealthy benefactors, seized the reins of power and began governing the masses. Nearly fifty years later, there is no crime, no unemployment, no homelessness, and no war. All that progress came at a price - individual freedom.People are now cogs in the corporate machine whose sole purpose is to enrich the elite. Every employee is monitored for any hint of subversion and subjected to the harshest penalties for even minor transgressions. Most of the world's population has accepted this new reality. Not all of them have. The corporations call them "terrorists." They call themselves humanity's last, best hope for liberty. When an underground group of dissenters detonates an explosion that causes problems with trading on the world's sole stock exchange, a series of events are set in motion that threatens to unravel the fabric of society. Egos clash as bureaucrats, corporate executives, and wealthy elites play politics amid an unprecedented threat to their corporatist economic system. Are these black swan events the harbinger of another great collapse, or is it the spark needed for the light of liberty to shine once more?Born from the ashes left by the collapse of world governments in 2039, the world in 2088 is eerily similar to the present - filled with surveillance, propaganda, greed, and opportunism.Liberty or Tyranny? When threats to both covens end their peaceful existence, Sage must consider Ravenwood's indecent proposal... despite Rafael's threat to walk. Two power-hungry, desirable warlocks. The cost extracted from Sage and Rafael may end them. The Wilde Coven is attacked, and Sage needs the Ravenwoods to prevent another witches and warlocks war. When the unthinkable happens, Sage's life flips upside down, and fierce new magic emerges. Is it enough magic to prevent a war and put Ravenwood's offer on ice? Will Sage and Rafael have a future together when they pick up the pieces... if Rafael lives?
These 21 psalms were chosen from the author's spiritual practice of reading the Psalms during the long pandemic months, enriched by brief commentary, prayers, and a process-relational meditation.
A landmark of the Weimar Republic, Ernst Toller's Hoppla, We're Alive! is one of the founding works of what would later be come to known as the epic theater and a powerful portrait of a fragile democracy at war with itself, inevitably corrupted from within by the rising forces of capitalism and fascism. Karl Thomas, a participant in the failed Soviet-style revolutions of 1918, has spent the past eight years in a mental hospital. Released into the Germany of 1927, Karl Thomas encounters each of his former comrades in a world where all of the lessons of the first world war and the revolution seem to have been forgotten. Building to a powerful and tragic climax, Toller's play has lost none of its power to shock, provoke, and awaken readers. This translation, adapted from its performance at La Mama in the fall of 2019, is an attempt to reconcile the play's multiple extant drafts and divided meanings. I would like to thank the rest of the LUDZ collective (Lloyd Huber, set and projections designer, Ulrich Lehman, dramaturg, and Zishan Ugurlu, director) for their vision and faith in bringing Hoppla its first North American production. In the winter of 1939, 12 years after he had staged this play in Weimar Berlin, Piscator was invited to open the Dramatic Workshop at the New School, long a home for artists and intellectuals in exile. Under Piscator's leadership, the Dramatic Workshop would come to be perhaps themes influential theater school in the United States, instrumental in the careers of Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Harold Clurman, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Marlon Brando, and Judith Malina. Earlier that spring, Piscator met for coffee with Toller to discuss a future project. Two days later, on May 22, 1939, Toller hanged himself, in what was then the Mayflower Hotel off Central Park West.Berlinica Publishing LLC is a multi-media publishing house based in New York City; with its sister company Berlinica Publishing UG based in Berlin.
