    by Roy Kemp
    £25.49

Roy Kemp's previously unpublished burlesque portfolio presents thirty-nine dancers performing in authentic clubs and backstage settings in 1950s New York. This nostalgic collection includes nearly 250 never-before-seen black and white and color photographs of well-known dancers, including Tempest Storm, Liz O'Leyar, Murine, Rita Gable, and Princess Domay, as well as other sultry performers, quite famous in their heyday. Kemp's talents as a photojournalist provide a fresh perspective on the lives of burlesque performers in this golden era. An artist as well as an investigator, Kemp created striptease photo montages and composed biographies for several dancers, giving the reader an intimate feel for the campy burlesque culture. This time capsule depicts live performances and peeps into club dressing rooms, and offers unedited material from pin-up photo sessions. It is a must-have for aspiring dancers, aficionados, or any modern-day guy or gal who appreciates the style and grit of this fabulous art form.

"Nearly 200 photographs chronicle the evolution of Hopi jewelry over the last four decades and illustrate, through the Kaopavi collection, the innovative and often stunning creations of twelve well-known Hopi artists. Included are Victor Coochwytewa, Phillip Honanie, and Michael Kabotie, as well as Ricky Coochwytewa, Sidney Sekakuku, Sharold Nutumya, Watson Honanie, Bradley Gashwazra, Norman Honie Sr., John Coochyumptewa, Beauford Dawahoya, and Jason Takala Sr. The artists incorporate gold, platinum, diamonds, and rare turquoise into a tradition previously identified predominantly with silver, while expanding the range of designs to include narrative and ceremonial representations. Some of the iconography speaks to the merging of two cultures: ancient Hopi and contemporary commodity. These objects have a historical voice and represent a major change not only in jewelry styles, but in Hopi culture."--Page 4 of cover.

Before television and MTV, the radio was central in the home, a way for the family to gather to hear the news or listen to music. Over 175 images provide an impressive visual journey through the radio’s aesthetic history, reflecting all the major design changes across the years. The images also reveal the diversity of materials, textures, colors, shapes, and sizes of radios of earlier ages. RETRO RADIO ranges from the 1920s tabletop wooden console models in the classic bread box, cathedral, and tombstone styles, to the wooden and early Bakelite and Catalin plastic art deco models of the 1930s to the 1950s, on to the thermoplastic models'' cutting-edge styling, and the transistors that ascended to prominence in the 1950s and beyond. Reintroducing machines that few people see anymore and perhaps hardly know existed, this fascinating book restores the once state-of-the-art machines'' aesthetic glory.

Until now, Army Air Force Bases in Nebraska during World War II had never before been presented in a single book (most of the photographed structures are no longer visible). These stories and photographs mostly focus on Americas Greatest Generation, which fought and won World War II. Also included are information on and images of the Martin B-26/Martin-Boeing B-29 Superfortress production plant at Fort Crook. One section deals with the building of modified B-29s for the 509th Composite Group, referred to after the war as the Atomic Bomb Group, which dropped the two atomic bombs on Japan, ending World War II. Also learn about German and Italian Prisoner of War camps, where POWs contributed to agricultural production in Nebraska, helping feed American troops, Allied troops, and civilian populations around the world. Most Americans are not aware of the huge numbers of Axis POWs held in America during the war.

This is a study of one of the 8th USAAF''s sub-units. The 1st Combat Bomb Wing (1CBW), created on 13 September 1943, was preceded first by the 1st Bomb Wing, and then the 101st Provisional Bomb Wing, which included the 91BG as an element. By then, the 91BG was joined by the 351BG and 381BG, with the 351BG later displaced by the 398BG. The operational experience of these units virtually spanned the entire 33 months of the "Mighty Eighth''s" existence and the often costly but finally successful campaign to deny Hitler''s Germany the means with which to pursue its warped dreams of conquest.

The third book in the series covers the story of a panzer soldat from Germany's Wehrmacht of the Second World War. Gnter Polzin served his brief military career with Schwere Panzer Abteilung 503, an outfit that was equipped throughout the war with Germany's vaunted Tiger tank. With a significant contribution from Martin Burmester, his story with Tiger-abteilung 503 is unusual, in that there has been little told from the perspective of a former member of the 2nd Company of 503. While there are several books available that cover 503, there has been limited coverage of the 2nd Company. From training to the harsh battles on the Eastern Front, on the invasion front in the West to the final battles in Hungary, and finally ending the war in captivity, both Polzin and Burmester were with 503 throughout the entire combat deployment of that unit. Combining their experiences with photographs, many previously unseen, and other, better-known photographs, a more complete picture of 503 is presented within the context of a Tiger tank veteran.

Brushes With War is a unique history of World War I in broad brush strokes. Over 230 original paintings, drawings, sculpture, and trench art by the combatants of World War I cover all aspects of the war and most major battles from Mons (1914) to the Meuse-Argonne (1918). The artists were American, Austrian, Australian, Belgian, British, Canadian, French, German, and Russian soldiers. These were not professional artists, but amateurs depicting their own daily struggles as they saw them. Just as snapshot photos are often more realistic than posed professional portraits, these works of art are more genuine impressions of the war than the official art and illustrations of the time.
