As Carl Van Vechten notes in his preface to this collection, "In the essay and especially in poetry the cat has become a favourite subject, but in fiction it must be admitted that he lags considerably behind the dog." Van Vechten sought to mitigate this disparity by creating this collection of charming (and sometimes frightening) feline tales. The collection includes stories by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Guy Wetmore Carryl, Algernon Blackwood, Honoré de Balzac, Booth Tarkington, G. H. Powell, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Thomas A. Janvier, W. H. Hudson, William Livingston Alden, Peggy Bacon, and Charles Dudley Warner.
ILLUSTRATED EDITIONAt the age of 67, French author Charles Perrault lost his employment and decided to focus on his children. In 1697 he published a collection of short stories based on existing folk tales, Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé.These stories, presented in this volume, are some of the most well-known children's stories in the western world, including Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding-Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), and La Belle au Bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty). Because of this collection of short morality stories, Perrault is often credited with creating the literary genre of the fairy tale.Other bilingual books available from Sleeping Cat Press: The Picture of Dorian Gray Selected Works of Edgar Allan Poe The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine Candide Shakespeare's Sonnets New Fairy Tales for Small ChildrenThe Count of Monte Cristo (Unabridged)The Last of the MohicansMadame Bovary

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1563 or 1564. At 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who was already pregnant with the first of their three children. His plays have been translated into every major modern language and are performed around the world more than the works of any other playwright. This collection of all 154 sonnets was first published in 1609. His most famous poem, "The Raven," earned him only $9 when it was published in 1845. His wife, Virginia, died two years after its publication, which seems to have sent Poe into a downward spiral of alcohol abuse and erratic behavior. Poe himself died only two years after Virginia, in 1849, at the age of 40.This bilingual edition of some of the most famous of Poe's short stories is designed to assist those learning French. **Translation realigned with original, 2014**Jean de La Fontaine was one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. Born in Château-Thierry in 1621, his literary career did not truly begin until he was in his thirties and spending most of his time in the French capital, Paris. Among La Fontaine's most famous works are his collections of fables, issued in several volumes between 1668 and 1694. The earliest of these books, from which the current collection was drawn, were mostly adapted from the works of Aesop, Babrius, and Phaedrus. La Fontaine initially wrote his rhyming fables for a sophisticated audience, but the poems were regarded as an excellent source of moral education for children and were used by educators and parents alike to instill proper values in their charges.La Fontaine died in Paris in 1695 at the age of 73. His remains now reside in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. This bilingual edition of some of La Fontaine's fables is designed to assist those learning French.
