This substance, a unique liquid form of the element helium, is produced and used in multi-ton quantities to enable much of modern science. Altogether, He II is at the heart of more than a dozen large scale scientific facilities world-wide representing an investment of tens of billions of dollars. It cools the magnets and cavities that contain and accelerate the particle beams at the Large Hadron Collider and is also used in accelerators for the study of rare isotopes and nuclear astrophysics. This little known liquid is, in reality, one of the enabling technologies of the future. A manifestation of quantum mechanics, He II exhibits amazing behaviors. The aim of this work is to present, in a unified and reasonably self-contained way, certain aspects of functional analysis which are needed to treat function spaces whose topology is not derived from a single norm, their topological duals and operators between those spaces. We treat spaces of continuous, analytic and smooth functions as well as sequence spaces. Operators of differentiation, integration, composition, multiplication and partial differential operators between those spaces are studied. A brief introduction to Laurent Schwartz¿s theory of distributions and to Lars Hörmander¿s approach to linear partial differential operators is presented.The novelty of our approach lies mainly on two facts. First of all, we show all these topics together in an accessible way, stressing the connection between them. Second, we keep it always at a level that is accessible to beginners and young researchers. Moreover, parts of the book might be of interest for researchers in functional analysis and operator theory. Our aim is not to build and describe a whole, complete theory, but to serve as an introduction to some aspects that we believe are interesting. We wish to guide any reader that wishes to enter in some of these topics in their first steps. Our hope is that they learn interesting aspects of functional analysis and become interested to broaden their knowledge about function and sequence spaces and operators between them.The text is addressed to students at a master level, or even undergraduate at the last semesters, since only knowledge on real and complex analysis is assumed. We have intended to be as self-contained as possible, and wherever an external citation is needed, we try to be as precise as we can. Our aim is to be an introduction to topics in, or connected with, different aspects of functional analysis. Many of them are in some sense classical, but we tried to show a unified direct approach; some others are new. This is why parts of these lectures might be of some interest even for researchers in related areas of functional analysis or operator theory. Despite the fact that elderly persons have a 33-35% chance of falling and becoming injured, most are ill-prepared. According to the World Health Organization, falls cause over 50% of accidental injuries and 39% of fatal injuries in the elderly. They are the fifth leading cause of death in the general population. Falls can be either non-mechanical, related to underlying illness or debilitation, or they can be mechanical, related to accidental trips and slips and caused by environmental factors such as poor lighting, surprise steps, lack of grab bars, and slippery bathroom floors. Non-mechanical falls can be related to cognitive disorders, such as stroke or dementia, or to frailty. They can also be related to over-medicating with sedatives, diabetic medications, or blood pressure therapy. Falls can be the consequence of aging or chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer. Patients with any of these disorders may have poor muscle tone, walking disorders, or a loss of equilibrium. Mechanical falls may be completely avoided by fall-proofing the home environment. This book outlines several practical tips for eliminating potential home hazards and reviews each of the major causes of falls to help the patient and his or her caregiver, as well as the health provider, prevent falling by adapting one's lifestyle. The U.S. government conducts a population census every 10 years, adds up the counts by geographic location, and uses the resulting numbers in formulas to allocate seats in the House of Representative and Electoral College, and to make public funding and tax decisions. It has served as an essential tool of representative democracy since 1790. The raw data from the census also serve as a decennial snapshot of the nation, a very long list, organized by household, ideally of all people resident on census day, with additional information on the name, age, race, sex, geographic location, and other characteristics for each individual. Americans recognized early in their history that the raw data, the list, could serve additional governmental functions, and over the centuries, erected guardrails to prevent improper use. They are encapsulated in the presidential proclamations announcing the upcoming census. The information collected from individual households is for aggregated use only, and cannot be used for the ¿taxation, regulation, or investigation¿ of individual persons or businesses. Americans have heeded the call to ¿stand up and be counted.¿ They also engage in an ongoing conversation to make sure that the information is used properly and ethically, that the census serves as a tool of representative democracy and advances the rights ¿ including human rights -- of all Americans. The record, however, reveals that there have been failures to meet this goal and that as a result the information provided by the responding public sometimes has been misused, causing considerable harm to vulnerable individuals, groups and entities. Today, as governments and social media are suspect for their exploitation of data about individuals, the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry in the United States during World War II provides a chilling example of such misuse of census data. This book reveals how census officials stepped beyond their normal roles as unobtrusive monitors of American demographic life and helped justify and administer the relocation and incarceration program. Census officials mobilized the substantial administrative and technical resources of the 1940 census, to map the neighbourhoods where Japanese-Americans lived, and planned their systematic removal. The officials then built ¿census-like¿ data systems to track the ¿evacuees¿ for the duration of the war, monitor their lives in the camps, and certify which ¿loyal¿ evacuees might be released from the camps for military or civilian service. After the war, census officials drafted an official history of their activities, but did not publish it. This book has lessons for policy makers and ordinary Americans alike, as we confront the new digital world in which we live. And it speaks to two of the great issues of our time: distrust in the institutions of government and the victimization of minorities.
