This book describes the possible distribution of life in the Milky Way. Our description is mathematical in order to be extrapolated from what we know that happened on Earth to what might have happened on the huge number of extrasolar planets existing in the Milky Way Galaxy. We use the statistical Drake equation, which identifies parameters for calculating the total number of life forms at all levels. This open access book addresses a question fundamental to the histories of empire and Africa: at the point of the colonial encounter, how was knowledge made? How did different communities, with little or no prior contact, construct meaning about one another? Amidst huge changes in the politics and economics of a continent, on the cusp of almost complete colonization at the hands of European powers at the end of the nineteenth century, how do the specifics of personality and contingency affect knowledge production? An obvious challenge in addressing this sort of question is the frequent lack of African-produced source material; here, we must work within the 'archives of oppression' and read both along and against the colonial grain in an attempt to restore African agency to this process of knowledge production. Drawing on the previously never-used diaries of explorer Frank Oates, who travelled throughout Matabeleland in the 1870s, the use of a single traveller's experiences in detail affords us the means to consider the fine details of the interactions between Europeans and Africans. Therefore, this study seeks to enhance existing work on race and empire of the nineteenth century by asking: what place do the fragilities, uncertainties, and contingencies of encounters between individuals have in our understanding of how knowledge is made?Christopher Prior is Associate Professor in Colonial and Postcolonial History at the University of Southampton, UK. This book aims to create consensus among hematology and oncology faculty in the guidance of trainees during their busy hematology/oncology inpatient months. These guidelines greatly facilitate organization of inpatient hematologic malignancies units by improving trainees' education. The handbook addresses unmet need to harmonize diagnostic procedures and therapy recommendations for complications observed in patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Along with an emphasis in malignant hematology, this handbook integrates common benign hematology and solid tumor emergencies chapters that complement trainees and practitioners understanding of complex and common inpatient consults. Quick implementation of recommendations is achieved by availability of algorithms and tables.Treatment of hemopoietic malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma is challenging. Medical students, residents and hematology/oncology fellows face difficulties in understanding how to manage complex leukemia, lymphoma, and oncology cases during their rotations in hematologic malignant units. Older adults¿are¿living¿longer¿with¿more¿chronic disease and functional impairment¿than at any other time in history. Office-based¿practice¿is inadequate tömeet the needs of patients whöhave difficulty leaving¿their homes for routine or urgent¿visits,¿and health care clinicians must choose between trying to manage their problems via telehealth¿or¿sending them to the emergency room via ambulance. Indeed, many clinicians receive little or no training in home-based medical care and¿are unable töconsider a home visit that might avert a health crisis or an¿emergency room¿visit. Other clinicians know that house calls are possible but may not know how to work them into day-to-day practice. ¿In recent years, a growing number of clinicians have focused their practice on home-based medical care to meet the rising need. In fact, there has been a substantial increase in house calls provided to Medicare beneficiaries. While the number of house calls has increased rapidly, the number of clinicians providing those visits has markedly decreased, suggesting that clinicians who are providing such care are making it the sole focus of their practice.This¿book is intended to be a practical reference for any clinician who has struggled to care for an older adult who has difficulty getting to the office. ¿By describing fundamental principles of geriatric house call medicine and application to specific diseases and conditions, we hope to provide clinicians with the tools they need to provide timely, compassionate, and high-quality care for their older adult patients.¿The second edition has been updated to reflect changes in the healthcare system and approaches to care since the publication of the first edition.

This book has two heroes - the surgeon and the robot. The education system and intelligence can create a human who is specialized in surgery. While the accurate analysis of data with machine learning, AI, can create a more autonomous robot for surgery. Currently, robots still require human input in the decision-making loop, whether or not this will always be the case is an issue that still needs to be debated, analyzed and studied, preferably by computer scientists AND surgeons.Surgeons and their patients are increasingly opting for less invasive surgeries. However, among their many advantages, there is an important issue: less invasiveness always means limited access to direct information from the operating field (3D image, local palpation sensations, all information about the "whole" patient and feedback from the accompanying team during teleoperation). To increase precision, we are increasingly using surgical robots and mechatronic instruments.
