Law's regulatory reach has grown significantly over the past few decades. Yet, at the same time, law schools and legal professions in Western and Western-oriented jurisdictions have undergone an acute crisis. How is this possible? In this insightful and wide-ranging book, Luca Siliquini-Cinelli argues that these trends are in fact complementary manifestations of a single phenomenon--namely, that law is and will always be more capable of regulating social interaction without the experiential contribution of legal experts. Siliquini-Cinelli contends that the separation of law's regulatory function from legal experts is structurally linked to the former's nature and operational dynamics as an intellectual artifact to be used for ordering purposes. As a product of the intellect, law is a matter of knowledge, not experience. In fact, Siliquini-Cinelli holds, law's artifactuality voids experience, including that of legal experts, making it redundant. This explains how law can thrive as a regulatory phenomenon while the very places where future legal professionals are formed and those places where it is practised are in crisis. To show this, Siliquini-Cinelli embarks upon a historical, philosophical, and comparative analysis of law's artifactuality, focusing on the teaching, study and practise of law as intellectual endeavours, from the advent of juristic activities in the Late Roman Republic to current legal pedagogies, practices, and reforms in Civil and Common law jurisdictions. In so doing, Siliquini-Cinelli employs the Latin phrase 'scientia iuris' to explain why and how legal education and practice pursue knowledge at the expense of experience, and the serious implications this has for lawyering activities. Moving beyond established narratives, Siliquini-Cinelli argues that 'scientia iuris' ought not be reduced to dogmatic analysis (scientia iuris as doctrina iuris). Rather, 'scientia iuris' denotes the knowledge of the law sought by all those who teach, study, and practise it, and which is actualised through a form of legal thinking and argumentation that moves along reason's metaphysical, constructivist lines (scientia iuris as cognitio iuris). Thus, scientia iuris is not the prerogative of a few legal scholars; rather, it lies at the very core of Western legal education and practice, broadly understood. The relevance of Siliquini-Cinelli's original and interdisciplinary analysis is profound and far-reaching: the crisis that legal education and practice are undergoing is not an isolated, or accidental, event; it is a consequence of the very ways in which law has been taught, studied, and practised since Rome. The main topic of this book is the calculation of underground structures at the limit states of serviceability. It considers the main schemes typical for underground structures for various purposes, gives the corresponding mathematical models describing the main geo-mechanical and technological factors in the construction and operation of extended excavations. Generalized criteria are proposed for making a technically and economically justified solution of the problem of determining the optimal forms and sizes of workings, bearing capacity, type of support and its erection, depending on the structural features of the rock mass, the primary stress fields of gravitational, tectonic, seismic acting in it. and technological origins, operational requirements for extended excavations. The corresponding algorithms, block diagrams and specific numerical examples of calculations are given. In most of the existing calculation methods the structure is considered in the elastic stage, the strength limit of the bearing capacity is considered as the moment when the maximum internal stresses reach the corresponding design resistances of the material. If it is legitimate to use this criterion in certain cases of calculation of statically determinable structures operating in the given loading mode, then in cases where the support operates in the mode of mutually influencing deformation together with the rock mass, it leads to a significant waste of material.

This open access book presents the final findings from the case studies developed within the Horizon 2020 SMOOTH project Educational Spaces. Passing through Enclosures and Reversing Inequalities through Educational Commons. The overall objective of the project was to understand, develop, and accelerate the potential impact of education on reversing inequalities for active social inclusion of children and young people at risk in Europe, through introducing the emergent paradigm of the "commons" as an alternative value and action system in the field of education (preschools, schools, and after-school programs). SMOOTH critically draws out the implications of the commons for refiguring education and for social change in general, on a footing of equality, sharing, participation, togetherness, caring, and freedom. Universities, research laboratories, municipalities, NGOs, museums, and youth organizations, in different European countries, have worked together to achieve the above aim involving almost 200 educators and teachers, and 800 children, and providing interesting insights and suggestions on how to implement educational commons in many different educational contexts. The target audience comprises policymakers and education leaders, students from Education and Communication degrees, researchers, and educators from both formal and non-formal educational contexts.

The majority of clothes we use regularly are made up of plastic-based materials like polyester, rayon, nylon, and acrylic. When these garments are washed in laundries, they give out tiny plastic fragments termed microfibers which end up in the environment and more precisely in the oceans. Plastic and synthetic polymer wastes which are often irresponsibly discarded into natural habitats undergo bio-fragmentation to give out huge amounts of microplastics and microfibers. Synthetic microfiber pollution has been reported in diverse ecosystems ranging from land and aquatic ecosystem to shorelines and seafloors. Due to the miniature size of the microfibers, it is difficult to detect, investigate, and prevent this type of pollution that is occurring on a larger scale. It is estimated that millions of tons of microfibers are released into the ocean from various sources. This increases the chances of living organisms in the biosphere ingesting the synthetic microfibers causing harm to the ecosystem and entering into the food chain adversely affecting human beings. It had become a great field of research because of its abundance and the challenges in the identification of synthetic and semisynthetic microfibers from the environmental samples and the time it takes to be degraded. This is the fifth proceedings volume published under the Women in Numbers umbrella. The WIN workshops and their proceedings volumes are part of the WIN network, aimed at highlighting the research of women and gender minorities in number theory as well as increasing their participation and boosting their potential collaborations in number theory and related fields.The volume contains research articles in the mathematical area of number theory, written by teams of scholars at all levels in the field. More information about the network, its goals and purpose, past and future conferences, and past proceedings volumes, can be found on the WIN website.This volume contains research outcomes and results produced by the collaborative research groups created under the Women in Numbers 5 workshop, the 5th in its series. The actual workshop was to take place in 2020 at the Banff International Research Station in Banff, Canada, but could not take place onsite due to COVID. The associated research groups, each consisting of 1-2 leaders and 2-4 junior researchers, were formed nevertheless and their collaborations went ahead in purely virtual form, as well as other papers by author teams for which at least 50% of the authors identify as women or gender minorities. These contributions include original research and survey articles in a wide variety of subareas within number theory. The former present new cutting-edge research that will be of interest to experts in the field, to the benefit or their own research. The survey articles serve as an accessible introduction for graduate students and other readers to areas of number theory that may be outside their area of expertise.
