This book sheds light on the mega-city region development in China as a new form of urbanization which plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country. It examines the challenges faced by the mega-city regions and opens up avenues for debates and further research.Economic reform of 1978 has led to an unprecedented growth in the population and economic development of China. A large portion of this increased urban population and the corresponding economic growth has been concentrated in the mega-city regions, such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). These three mega-city regions have less land but more people and thus higher economy, resulting in various issues and challenges faced by these regions. These challenges pertain to the socio-economic development, transport, environment, governance and development strategy, which this book explores through case studies of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Wuhan. This book also explains and analyses the economy, migration processes, transport development, environmental conditions and governance of the mega-city regions of China.With an overview of China's rapid urbanisation and the consequent economic growth, this book provides an essential understanding of related issues in order to establish appropriate strategies and policies to sustain the process of mega-city region development.

This book examines the relationship between Britain and Ireland, specifically the central role played by print and broadcast media in communicating political, cultural, and social differences and similarities between the two islands.The relationship between Ireland and Great Britain has a long and complex history. Given their geographical proximity and shared language one key dimension of this relationship has been the communication media - print and electronic - that have mediated this relationship. This book addresses this important, but relatively neglected, topic at a critical time in Anglo-Irish relations. Taking the long view, as well as looking in detail at specific episodes, the contributors map British-Irish interactions in print and broadcast media. This volume assesses the proprietorial and journalistic connections between various media institutions, the conditions under which media organisations operated and distribution channels employed. It considers media influences in terms of the role of media organs in constructing national identity and promoting social change. Language, Style and Variation in Contemporary Indian English Literary Texts is a volume which examines the linguistic and stylistic forms of Indian English in new fictional texts to explore the power of language to construct meaning, express identity, and convey ideology. Specifically, this study proposes the elaboration and application of postcolonial stylistics, i.e. an interdisciplinary methodology that uses different disciplines, such as literary linguistics and postcolonial studies as a critical lens to read contemporary Indian authors like Jeet Thayil, Deepa Anappara, Avni Doshi, Tabish Khair, and Megha Majumdar. The linguistic fabric of their fiction is investigated in a series of case studies, observing the stylistic rendition of a wide range of themes and tropes, such as the representation of Otherness, drug discourse, lament and the senses, which cumulatively portray aspects of the current Indian narrative scenario. The book develops ideas growing out of several disciplines to reach a fuller understanding of cultural phenomena in the postcolonial context, and by extension in the social world.

Knowledge and Music Education: A Social Realist Account explores current challenges for music education in relation to wider philosophical and political debates, and seeks to find a way forward for the field by rethinking the nature and value of epistemic knowledge in the wake of postmodern critiques. Focusing on secondary school music, and considering changes in approaches to teaching over time, this book seeks to understand the forces at play that enhance or undermine music's contribution to a socially just curriculum for all. The author argues that the unique nature of disciplinary-derived knowledge provides students with essential cognitive development, and must be integrated with the turn to more inclusive, student-centred, and culturally responsive teaching. International and Local Actors in Disaster Response uses the Beirut explosion in August 2020 to explore disaster prevention and response in developing states.Disasters, whether man-made or natural, have always tested governments and their bureaucracies. Despite numerous research efforts, existing empirical literature does not provide conclusive evidence on how multiple aspects of social infrastructure can simultaneously affect disaster preparedness and recovery, and what role the international community can have. This book analyzes the role of international and local organizations in responding to the disaster in Beirut and assesses the interorganizational collaboration between the public and private sectors following the explosion. This study critically explores the lives of women in Britain during the immediate postwar period 1945-64, and re-examines the current conception of the 1950s as a nadir for women - when the values of domesticity and motherhood were paramount.

The political and environmental crises of the twenty-first century require new approaches to the way we think and act politically. This book explores the potential for engagement between green and civic republican thought as part of these new approaches.The green and civic republican traditions have important historical and conceptual connections. They share an emphasis on the idea of interdependence, the common good as distinct from individual and sectional interests, and a corresponding critique of freedom as non-interference and of arguments for minimising the state. Both see the human project as marked by vulnerability, and the achievement of stability and sustainability as a critical though fragile goal, in whose realisation the state must play a significant role. Both focus accordingly on constitutional law, active citizenship and participatory democracy, and adopt a critical stance towards economic inequality and capitalist economic growth.The chapters address these in a variety of ways - from examining fundamental concepts: freedom, rights and political judgement, through analysing the potential grounds for connections between green and republican political theory - vulnerability, limits, sustainability and civic virtue - to outlining the kind of agonistic republican politics and green political economy that these imply.The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Review of Social and Political Philosophy.

In Governance in the 21st Century, Morris Bosin offers an integrated approach in addressing real world governance challenges.Divided into four broad sections, Bosin begins in Part 1 by introducing the nature of governance, its use in the public and private sector, and at different levels in our society. Part 2covers traditional and emerging approaches to governance and reviews the various epistemological roots that frame our understanding of governance approaches. Part 3 includes a detailed discussion of the three components of his proposed approach to an expanded view of governance - requisite variety, complexity, and reflexivity.
