The Allied Occupation of Japan brought an influx of African American soldiers and culture to Japan, which catalyzed the writing of black characters into postwar Japanese literature. This book considers the literature engendered by postwar Japanese authors' robust cultural exchanges with African Americans and African American literature.
Offers the first sustained look at the creative interactions between artists and musicians of the 1960s, looking at four pairs of creators who used process-oriented ideas and techniques in their music and art: Dan Flavin and La Monte Young; Sol LeWitt and Milton Babbitt; Richard Serra and Steve Reich; and Bruce Nauman and Meredith Monk.
Uses Chaucer's likely reading, circumstances, and literary and social affiliations as guides to understanding his poetry, within the context of late medieval English culture and the reshaping of the concept of these particular offices that suited the needs of a future whose dynamics he anticipated.
By conducting a close reading of six poems and then a broad survey of martial lyric, exile poetry, political lyric, and sympotic lyric as a whole, Jessica Romney demonstrates that sympotic lyric focuses on the same basic behaviours and values to construct social identities regardless of the content or subgenre of the poems in question.
Analyses transcripts for all district and circuit court confirmation hearings between 1993 and 2012. The authors find that the practice of confirmation hearings for district and circuit nominees provides an important venue in which senators can advocate on behalf of their policy preferences and bolster their chances of being reelected.
Combines a close reading of the late-1970s music press discourse with musical analyses and theories of identity to unpack post-punk's status as a genre. Mimi Haddon traces the discursive foundations of post-punk and presents case studies of bands including Wire, PiL, Joy Division, the Raincoats, and Pere Ubu.
Provides an innovative institutionalist account for why religion enables political activism in some settings, but not others. Christopher Hale argues that decentralized religious institutions facilitate grassroots collective action, and he uses a multimethod approach to test this explanation against several theoretical alternatives.
Offers the first comprehensive examination of Lucretius' engagement with satire. The author argues that what has often been understood as an artfully persuasive exposition of Epicurean philosophy designed to convert the uninitiated is actually a mimesis of the narrator's attempt to effect such a conversion on his internal narrative audience.
Positing animal stories as a distinct and significant corpus within Kafka's entire poetics, and closely examining them in dialogue with both literary and posthumanist analysis, Kafka's Zoopoetics critically revisits animality, interspecies relations, and the very human-animal contradistinction in the writings of Franz Kafka.
Introduces a conceptual framework of ""international order"" categorized by three levels (power, rules, norms) and three issue-areas (security, political, economic). Each contributor examines two questions: Has China already challenged this dimension of international order? How will China challenge this dimension of international order in the future?
Explores the ways that international politics is a form of interspecies politics, one that involves the interactions, ideas, and practices of multiple species, both human and nonhuman, to generate differences and create commonalities.
Offers a comprehensive evaluation of the role of religion in international relations, broadening the scope of investigation to such topics as the relationship between religion and cooperation, religion and conflict, and the relationship between religion and the quality of life.
Situates the Council on Foreign Relations study group in its historical and historiographical contexts, and offers an analysis of the participants. The book includes seven preparatory papers on diverse theoretical approaches, penned by political scientist George Lipsky, followed by the digest of discussions from the study group meetings.
The idea of "Thucydides' Trap" warns that all rising powers threaten established powers. As China increases its power relative to the US, the theory argues, the two nations are inevitably set on a collision course. But how enlightening is an analogy based on the ancient Greek world for understanding contemporary international relations?
Brings together the insights and approaches of history, criminology, socio-legal studies, and law to present a range of case studies of the encounter between law and colonialism. Through historical and contemporary case studies, the book emphasizes the nature of colonialism as a structural injustice.
