This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. This lucid and accessible study of Michael Polanyi (1891-1976), the scientist of world repute who challenged the modern scientific view of truth, introduces Polanyi's trailblazing work and main ideas and demonstrates their continued value and meaning for today's world. Scott highlights the place of the creative imagination in science and shows the deadly effects of a mistaken understanding of science on our modern civilization.
The great number of New Testament manuscripts makes the task of citing evidence in text-critical studies appear to be overwhelming. Since it is not practical to cite all of the manuscript evidence, scholars have attempted to find representative texts. Long ago they noted that many of the manuscripts were related, i.e. certain groups of manuscripts share certain combinations of variants, probably because members of the groups are "descendants" of the same manuscripts. The profile method is Professor Frederik Wisse's attempt to establish "an accurate and rapid procedure for the classification of the manuscript evidence on any ancient text with large manuscript attestation, and to present an adequate basis for the selection of balanced representatives of the whole tradition."
Translated by Daniel P. BaileyThe Servant Song of Isaiah 53 has been highly significant in both Jewish and Christian thought. Rarely, however, has it been explored from the broad range of perspectives represented in this long-awaited volume. In The Suffering Servant ten talented biblical interpreters trace the influence of the Servant Song text through the centuries, unpacking the theological meanings of this rich passage of scripture and its uses in various religious contexts. Chapters examine in depth Isaiah 52:13-53:12 in the Hebrew original and in later writings, including pre-Christian Jewish literature, the New Testament, the Isaiah Targum, the early church fathers, and a sixteenth-century rabbinic document informed by Jewish-Christian dialogue.Contributors:Jostein ÅdnaDaniel P. "A comprehensive and useful discussion of Christian ethics applied to avariety of difficult and timely issues is no simple task, but Reichenbachand Anderson have risen to it. They have provided a book that is a great starting place for further consideration of topics such as the environment, assisted reproduction, abortion, surrogacy, the human genome, the pursuitof knowledge, the brain-mind issue, and human sexuality. Their treatmentof these issues is integrated by the adoption of a biblically based paradigmfrom Genesis: 'filling,' 'ruling over,' and 'caring for.' This is a bookpacked with information, suggestions, and challenges."-Richard Bube, Stanford University "An important book for the Christian community. The authors have rescuedcreation from the polemical battlefield it has become for too many Christiansand have applied God's creation ordinances to some of the pressing practicalissues of our time. Their approach is wide-ranging and novel, getting usaway from the tired debates about conservatives and liberals. On Behalf of God may provide the fresh look at ethics that is badly missing in entrenchedChristian circles. I believe we may look back ten years from now and see this book as a watershed for Christian witness in the real world."-R.J. Berry, University College London
In this frank, instructive, and heartening personal story, Lillian Grissen tells about the severe depression that she herself experienced. Her pain - mental, emotional, and physical pain - was excruciating, and at first she felt hopelessly trapped in it. But with the help of a gifted Christian psychiatrist, Grissen began to stop blaming herself and to confront the core of her problem - her relationship as a child with her mother. Over a period of five long years - also with her husband's support, her pastor's compassionate counsel, and the right combination of therapy and medication, and God's gracious strength - Grissen gradually climbed out of the pit of her depression. "A profound yet simple book about a complex condition: clinical depression. Only one who has experienced the pain of the darkness of depression and the joy of the light of recovery could have had the courage to trace the arduous journey." - Katie Funk Wiebe, author of Bless Me Too, My Father
Long views 1-2 Kings as a substantially unified written work of historiography, produced during the Babylonian exile. Hence he begins his detailed form-critical commentary on 2 Kings where he left off in his volume on 1 Kings. Following the series format, Long discusses the text of 2 Kings unit by unit and integrates his form-critical work with a discussion of the book's literary art (e.g., style, metaphor, imagery) to expose "the narrative genius which awakens imaginative response in the reader."
