A History of Japanese Literature

The diplomat and scholar William George Aston (1841-1911) wrote several highly regarded publications, particularly on Japanese language. This 1899 work is a chronological survey of Japanese literature from its early songs to the European-influenced literature of the nineteenth century. It remained unsurpassed in its thoroughness for eighty years.
