About A Woman Made of Snow

Scotland, 1949: Caroline Gillan and her new husband Alasdair have moved back to Kelly Castle, his dilapidated family estate in the middle of nowhere. Stuck caring for their tiny baby, and trying to find her way with an opinionated mother-in-law, Caroline feels adrift, alone and unwelcome. But when she is tasked with sorting out the family archives, Caroline discovers a century-old mystery that sparks her back to life. There is one Gillan bride who is completely unknown - no photos exist, no records have been kept - the only thing that is certain is that she had a legitimate child. Alasdair's grandmother. As Caroline uncovers a strange story that stretches as far as the Arctic circle, her desire to find the truth turns obsessive. And when a body is found in the grounds of the castle, her hunt becomes more than just a case of curiosity. What happened all those years ago? Who was the bride? And who is the body...?

I absolutely adored this book. What an absolute triumph!

I have previously read one other book by Elisabeth Gifford called 'The Lost Lights of St Kilda' and so I knew just how special her writing style is. It is truly beautiful. Delicate and emotive, wonderfully descriptive but without being overly flowery, and truly evocative of both time and place... and this novel is no exception. It is written in an equally stunning fashion, with such a deft hand, I'm absolutely sold and will pick up whatever she writes next.

Historical Fiction is my favourite genre, and I have a special fondness for novels set in the wilds of Scotland, so this one was already off to a good start.

'A Woman Made of Snow' takes place in 1949 when Caroline and Alasdair, and their young child, move to the family estate in Scotland. When a body is discovered in the grounds following a flood, Caroline sets about researching to try and discover who this person was, and why they had been buried within the grounds but with no records of who they were or why.

The mystery of the piece was handled wonderfully, and I enjoyed every step of the way. The flashbacks to previous generations was also wonderfully woven into the narrative, and I adored every moment.

From start to finishing this was an absorbing book, and one I am sure to revisit.

Thank you to Corvus for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
