Alithia

Fyrstespejlet var i renæssancen en yndet genre, som formulerede de politisk-religiøse idealer, der bandt øvrighed og undersåtter sammen. Fyrstespejle blev ofte forfattet ved tronskifter, når en ung, uprøvet og – håbede man – påvirkelig hersker stod over for at overtage magten. Det er også tilfældet med Johann Damgaards fyrstespejl Alithia, som han i efteråret 1597 overgav til den 20-årige Christian IV. Den unge konge svarede med at invitere Damgaard til Frederiksborg og diskutere værket, hvis titel betyder sandhed, med ham kapitel for kapitel. Meget taler for, at Damgaard med sit fyrstespejl i reformatorisk ånd og humanistisk iklædning har ramt plet i sin repræsentation af i datidens politiske kultur. Dertil kommer, at sproget er friskt, fyndigt og ikke uden humor som f.eks. i de fingerede breve fra djævelen til lasterne og fra Kristus til dyderne, som er skrevet i bedste kancellistil.Teksten er gengivet bogstavret og forsynet med en indledning, der sætter den ind i en historisk og kulturel sammenhæng. EnglishIn the Renaissance, the Mirror of Princes was a popular genre which expressed the political religious ideals that tied together the authorities and the subjects. Mirrors of Princes were often composed at the accession of a new king when a young, inexperienced and - it was hoped - impressionable ruler was about to come to power. This is also the case of Johann Damgaard's Mirror of Princes Alithia which he delivered to 20-year-old King Christian IV in the autumn of 1597. The young king responded by inviting Damgaard to Frederiksborg to discuss the work, whose title means thruth, with him chapter by chapter. There are many indications that Damgaard with his Mirror of Princes in its reformatory spirit and humanistic attire was spot on in the description of the political culture of that time. Furthermore, the language is lively, pithy and not without a sense of humour, as in the simulated letters from the Devil to the vices and from Christ to the virtues which are written in true Civil Service Style.The text has been reproduced letter-for-letter and has been provided with an introduction which places it in its historical and cultural context. The annotation deals with both linguistic and factual matters. Alithia is published with an introduction and notes by Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen and caters for people who take an interest in philology, theology and the historical field.Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen is with the Department of History at the University of Copenhagen and has published several books on the Danish monarchy and the political structure, in particular in the 16th to 18th centuries.
