The Concise Knowledge Astronomy, published in 1898, was one of a series of popular reference books by experts. Illustrated by over 100 photographs and drawings, the book aims to provide the educated non-specialist reader with an understanding of current astronomical knowledge and theories, including a historical outline of astronomy.
The System of the Stars (1890), a non-technical survey of sidereal astronomy in the nineteenth century, contains some of the earliest published astrophotographs. The work is important today in the context of the nineteenth-century intellectual debates on the relationship between the sciences and religious belief.
The Herschels discussed in this biography are Sir William Herschel, his sister Caroline, and William's son Sir John Herschel. Their lives and achievements are examined and their individual influences on astronomy are analysed in this book by the well known astronomical writer Agnes Clerke, which was first published in 1895.
Agnes Clerke's A Popular History (1885) surveys the progress made in the field of astronomy during the nineteenth century. It brought Clerke an international reputation as a science writer and is a key text for studying the history of astronomy and its place in the intellectual world of Victorian society.
