Free! is a fictional examination of freedom experienced through characters as varied and complex as the notion of universal freedom itself. They are young, old, rich, poor, black, white, male, female, free, slave, and inextricably American. Set in Macon County, Missouri and told in the style of the late nineteenth century slave narrative, Free! is a novel presented in three parts.
