Squirrels are medium-sized rodents that are recognized for their speed and dexterity. The family Sciuridae is home to more than 280 different species, all bar those found in Australia and Antarctica. Common characteristics of squirrels include a bushy tail and strong claws for clinging to tree trunks.
Squirrels can be found in a wide range of environments, from woods and woodlands to parks and even cities. They are well-known for their flexibility and success in a wide range of settings. Squirrels are diurnal, or active during the day and sleeping at night.
Nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables make up the bulk of a squirrel's diet. Their reputation for hoarding stems from the fact that, in preparation for the colder months, they stockpile food in numerous caches. Squirrels are opportunistic eaters, meaning that they will eat anything is available, including insects, eggs, and small animals.
