In dem Roman 'Hilligenlei' erzählt Gustav Frenssen die Geschichte des jungen Bauern Hauke Haien, der sich zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts gegen die starren Traditionen seiner Gemeinde auflehnt. Dabei erweckt Frenssen das Leben und die Landschaften von Nordfriesland im 18. Jahrhundert zum Leben.
