In the Shadow of Race

Race in United States has been associated with inequality. This book aims to recover history of this distinction and the divisive politics it engenders. It locates origins of ethnicity in New York Zionist movement of early 1900s. It argues that Jewish activists identified as ethnics as a way of defending immigrant difference as distinct from race.
