In the Shadows

Tracing the lives of Anne Herbert Higginson, a noblewoman in hiding, and Sarah Burton, a commoner who practices medicine under the guise of a midwife and healer.
They arrive in the New World expecting to find a future free from the control of the English monarchy. Instead, they encounter harsh Puritan ministers bent on punishing those they deem wicked, and illiterate, superstitious Puritans who oppose reason over religion.
Sarah and Anne advise each Other, strengthening their resolve to cleverly outwit their tormentors.
