Swiss diplomat Aime Humbert (1819-1900) first published in French in 1866 his account of life under the Tokugawa shogunate in its final years. Reissued here is the 1874 English translation, updated with descriptions of the 1868 revolution and its aftermath, and including almost 200 illustrations taken from Japanese prints.
