The old Latin saying, "ipsa scientia potestas est", found in his Meditationes Sacrae (1597) translated as "knowledge itself is power" is attributed to none other than Francis Bacon. And our heroine's mother tells our heroine nearly the same thing as our heroine heads out the door to play! And then, our heroine (confused by what her mother said) does what she always does; and she asks all her friends what her mother said in an attempt to figure out what her mother meant.
