Ce poème latin épique se focalise sur la vie des ermites dans le désert de Thébaïde au début de l'ère chrétienne. Le poète Statius y décrit le conflit entre les désirs du corps et l'ascèse spiritualiste, ainsi que l'importance de se détacher du monde matériel. L'abbé Cormiliolle a ajouté une préface en français détaillant l'histoire et le contexte de l'oeuvre.
