The Union Pacific has just cut its way across the Great Plains to Promontory, Utah. For the first time travelers can easily move from one end of the country to the other. But the new rail line doesn't mean travel is easy-or safe.

Ben and Dessa have already faced the dangers firsthand, and their relationship has suffered for it. Dessa's hot-tempered and impulsive, and Ben isn't sure he wants to be tamed by a woman accustomed to wealth and an easy life. But their differences have to be set aside when a mix of outlaws and villainous city slickers threaten their happiness-and their lives.
