About Nitrification Inhibitor Effects on Potato Yields and Soil Inorganic Nitrogen
Abstract:
Nitrification inhibitors Dicyandiamide (DCD) and Nitrapyrin were tested with field-grown potato (Solanum tuberosum) on sandy Coastal Plain soils in northern Florida. These compounds are intended to reduce leaching of applied nitrogen fertilizer by inhibiting the bacterial transformation of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen, which is much more prone to leaching. Theoretically, this should increase crop yields and reduce detrimental environmental effects of nitrogen fertilizers. In these trials, nitrification was inhibited but yields of chipping potato was generally not increased.
