Proof that R.W.Emerson knew about the Scandinavian Self-Reliant Trait long before he wrote the essay entitled Self-Reliance. The original concept came together in 1994 within the hallways of Portland State University, in Portland Oregon. Then it evolved and developed into a concrete written proposal as part of a Ph.D. application to Roskilde University in Denmark nearly a decade later. One year into the program, an invitation was extended by Harvard University to travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to conduct research using Ralph Waldo Emerson's original handwritten journals housed in Harvard Houghton Library. From there, the research took another turn - quite literally, northwest- to Concord, Massachusetts, and added new places to the research roster such as the Concord Library, the Concord Museum, the Emerson House, and finally, the Old Manse, in which a plethora of resources were discovered and utilized to make the foundation for this study complete.
